Love this place. Delicious, wide variety of Asian style buns, both sweet and savory, with lots of fillings to choose from. Inexpensive but that doesn’t impact the quality. Their cakes are absolutely divine and some of the best I’ve had.

This really is nothing special, the good is really nice, and they have a great selection, but the combination and price is just a little bit more then I think break should be.

BreadTop is a godsend.
For those not used to Eastern breads: discard your preconceived notions about «bread», as these baked goods are very different to what you’d find in your typical Western bakery. They’re buns that can be roughly divided into «sweet» and «savory» categories — sweet buns are very sweet but hardly filling, and savory buns are usually either reminiscent of pizza or stuffed with meat.
Some suggestions for next time you BreadTop:
— Melon Bread [Arguably one of the most popular types in Korea and Japan, very sugary sweet]
— Seafood/​Crab Bun [Good go-​to for any crab meat lovers]
— Taro Buns [Taro is like a purple potato, and it has a subtly sweet flavor if you’re not into «full on sugar» kind of sweet]
— Chocolate Horn/​Coronet [Do you like nutella? This is for you]
— Curry Chicken Bun [Probably my favorite of the savory breads]
Also, don’t forget to look at the fridge and try the pudding. They’re delicious and come in nifty glass containers.

I love Breadtop. They have such an amazing range of savoury and sweet bread items. You simply pick up a tray and go around with tongs picking up what tickles your fancy. Bread is very affordable and they have such a great range. A very different approach to a bakery but one that is very unique and a great place to stop for lunch.

You could easily gain tons of weight if you had to walk past Bread Top every day. I can’t walk past without buying something.
Bread top is an Asian bakery with a huge range of self-​serve baked sweet bread cakes, breads and savoury rolls. There are little hotdog bread rolls, pizza rolls and pork floss rolls along side chocolate rolls. All for a few dollars a piece.
Please, do yourself a favour and go to the fridge section and get the banana shaped container. It has the SOFTEST, tastiest cake surrounding a delicious cream and within that, a whole banana. Wow.

I’ve been waiting for a place like BreadTop to come along for a long time. In Asia these bakeries are pretty common, but Asian sweet bread wasn’t too common in Adelaide until now. Time to fill up on carbs!
I get excited about little things like picking your own bread by hand (by tongs). The only problem is that because I have the power of the tongs in my hand, I tend to take far too much than I had intended, and end up with bags full of bread. There’s only one solution following a dilemma like that — you have to eat it all before it goes stale!
The bread is simply delicious. It’s quite different from Western bread, as it’s much sweeter, and it often can be eaten alone without any accompanying spreads or fillings. BreadTop has a large variety of both sweet and savoury baked goods, including pastries, cakes, and rolls. There’s something for everybody here, and if you’re anything like me and can’t get enough of bread, you’ll want everything.

I love BreadTop. I too first discovered them in Melbourne, and was rapt to discover I could get my sweet Asian pastries in Adelaide too. Seriously, their that good.
Everything in BreadTop looks and tastes amazing, I always spend way too much money in there, despite the fact that they are really quite cheap. It’s almost like an addiction. A nutella filled pastry baked in the oven addiction.
I like the fact that you help yourself. Yes, I’m one of those people that requests the donut up the front, to the left with the pink sprinkles. This way I can pick what I want.

A homeless man asked me for a couple dollars (as they often do because I think I must be the least intimidating person in Adelaide), and since I was not nearly convinced that this particular gentleman was going to spend any of my money on something legal, I gave him BreadTop instead. For the record, I happened to be eating it at the time of his approach.
Once I handed it to him, he asked me what it was and I explained that it was some sort of bread with an asian twist. After we bonded for about a split second, he took a bite and then carried on his merry way. He seemed to enjoy it.
Personally I love bread, and I often say I could live off it. As far as BreadTop goes, the bread is pretty good however it is far too sweet for me to rave on about it. Having said that, I really do like the store itself. It is quick and productive with trays and tongs to pick out a few good nibbling options.
Alternatively the King William Street BreadTop is located along many of the city bus stops. Its location makes it a good little home-​time snack while waiting for Adelaide’s slow public transport to arrive.

Breadtop has been around for a while in other states, and the first place I saw it was in Jakarta, Indonesia. It has recently come to Adelaide, and is doing quite well as there is an existing market here to cater for, namely international students.
Its winning element would be efficiency in getting what you want. You simply take a tray and pick up bread with the available tongs, then take your tray to the counter and they put it through. There are a range of flavours both sweet and savoury. I have tried and enjoyed the pork floss buns, hot dogs, and cheese pastries. There is this curious looking pitch-​black bun, which looks like something I’d rather not say here, called a Charcoal Bun. Made out of bamboo charcoal, topped with a slight butter touch and garlic paste, it is supposedly healthy and nutritious.
In the counter displays also lie fabulous looking cakes and sweets. The blueberry and green tea cheesecakes look absolutely divine, with impeccable detail and presentation. I have had the mango pudding, which is refreshingly tasty and delicious on a hot summer day.
Breadtop is great value too; I once bought tea for around $ 2.00. They have a nice seating area and is conveniently located on Grote St, Chinatown.

I freaking love BreadTop. I first discovered the Asian-​style bakery in Melbourne a few years ago: filled to the brim with mouthwatering, sugarcoated, chocolate-​filled pastries and cakes, needless to say it was love at first sight.*
So you can imagine the squeals of excitement (yes, I squeal with excitement — what, you don’t?) when I saw that it had opened at long last on Grote Street. Yet another reason why Chinatown is one of my very favourite places to eat in Adelaide.
If it were legal and socially acceptable I would marry the Nutella-​filled pastry horns. I would also *highly* recommend the danishes and custard buns. While Nana’s Bakery has been serving up Asian-​style treats inside the Central Market for a while now, for sheer selection I always head to BreadTop. I also dig the self service.
They also — as I recently discovered — bake custom birthday cakes. We opted for a puppy cake for my niece’s second birthday and she absolutely loved it. (Though it did feel vaguely wrong to be slicing into something so cute.)
In related news: I once bought one of their mini hamburgers and was followed home by a golden retriever. And I love golden retrievers: but not enough to share my hamburger. True story.
*I should probably confess here that I am a pastry addict. Can you tell?
