Indigenu

Tony (the owner) is Indigenu and this gallery is his home (literally).
Walk through the door and Tony will offer you one of his freshly cooked kangaroo balls or chocolate wattle seed brownies that «he’s just taken out of the oven.» He’ll let you browse as you pretend you know what you are looking for in a piece of indigenous art and if you start to ask questions like «what is the good one?» he will answer.
Tony buys all of his art direct from SA indigenous families and I love the fact he buys the art outright and pays the artist prior to even selling a piece. Every piece of work has a story if you want to find out about it and you could literally spend hours here pouring over work.
The prices are ridiculously reasonable, probably the cheapest I have seen, but that is also because you are coming here to buy a piece of art you fall in love with, not a piece purely for the name of the artist who painted it. It is also a great place to pick up $ 20-​$ 50 gifts for tourists or friends/​family living overseas.
I haven’t been into such an unpretentious, friendly and welcoming gallery in a long time and know that when I save up enough money and time one day I will be in here to buy my next piece.

Indigenu is a small art gallery dedicated to promoting Aboriginal art and culture. Originally started in Tony Straccia home, his art collection has since got too big and decided it was time to move them to the city, so that they can be viewed and sold.
Tony has a passion for Aboriginal art work and has been collecting their works of more than a decade. During these times he had developed strong relationships with artists and is able to purchases their works directly, and arranges it to seen in exhibitions and events. Many of the proceeds from these events are sent back to support the artists and their families.
As part of the Unilocal’s SALA walking tour I came here to have a look at some of the art work. I don’t have a passion for any type of art work, to me Aboriginal art work is just of bunch of colourfully dots that has been place to form some kind of weird image, and there is usually some story behind the image. Having said that, there are people have a passion for these fine art works and are willing to spend their disposable income on these printings. If anyone asks me where is a good place to purchase Aboriginal work I would recommend this place.
Tony also has a catering service. You should try his chocalate brownies with wattle seed, they are very delicious!

I’m a friend of Tony so I’m biased… however I wanted to agree with Lincon C. Tony is genuinely dedicated to serving the interests of both his artists and his customers. 99%of Tonys artwork comes direct from local aboriginal artists that he has long standing business relationship with (and he pays them upfront, they don’t have to come back once the painting is sold which is the standard procedure with commercial galleries). I admire his dedication to the painting families that he represents (I once saw him buy a painting of a 5 year old aboriginal boy and paid him cash for it the boy was so happy!)., the artists and their families are always invited and included at exhibitions and often come into the gallery to do painting demonstrations which customers can enjoy watching. He creates so many opportunities for the customers to meet and get to know a bit about the artists themselves which is almost unheard of. Such a great place and because the artwork is so fairly priced it’s always changing from month to month. Customers who visit often are rewarded with new and interesting works all the time.

Indigenu is a small privately-​owned art gallery specialising in aboriginal art.
I admit I’m not a big fan of art galleries. Art itself is fine and I enjoy collecting good pieces I like (and can afford). But, art galleries tend to attract a certain pretentiousness which, for me is a big turnoff. I don’t find this attitude at Indigenu, though. Tony (the owner) is helpful and very friendly. He obviously enjoys what he does and loves sharing his joy with the people who visit his gallery. He also has a good eye for talent and provides an avenue for talented emerging artists.
As I haven’t visited many other aboriginal art galleries against which I can compare, I initially only gave Indigenu 4 stars. However, as Tony purchases his stock at a fair price and doesn’t add on massive markups to the resale value (unlike some other galleries, especially overseas), I think that easily deserves a fifth star.
