It seems like Top Video haven’t learnt the main lesson from the DRM fights in music and in videogames — if it is easier for your customers to obtain your product dishonestly than honestly then you’re doing something wrong, and you will soon have no customers left.
It’s idiotic. You need to provide a driver’s license and a credit card to join up, to have access to their insignificant range. I get that they’re worried about potential customers running off with their DVDs, but the fact is that if I wanted to steal movies there are now easier ways to do it.
And, in two or three years time, the same will be true for legally renting them in Australia, and I see nothing in Top Video’s repertoire to suggest that they’ll survive past that.
