La Cachette

Great little café. Toby’s coffee beans, well made but not amazing.
Primarily a bakery café, so the pastries and cakes are fantastic. They also have a breakfast menu of standard café fare, which is also good. Nothing spectacular, but well made and presented. But definitely their strong suit is their baked items, and particularly their sweet tarts, which are excellent.

My colleagues and I came here for lunch practically everyday while on a work trip. This was the closest and best food option near our office. The board specials are delicious. I’ve had their mushroom risotto, steak sandwich, various soups, and various savory pies and tarts. All were fulfilling and well portioned.

Quick easy and hassle free. Staff are always warm and friendly with a great variety of options to enjoy. You could come here everyday for two weeks and have something different every single occasion.

I agree — a very decent café in the area and has a somewhat French twist :) the owner is a very pleasant healthy man which helps as he is the face of the business. I think they close really early so only good for breakfast and lunch.

The rain is pouring down like a cavalcade of skydivers in watery jumpsuits. A constant procession of aqua slaps on my face as I cycle from Surry Hills to Alexandria.
Today is not the day to ride a bike but what choice did I have? I had to get around and on these wet and wild days, relying on damp, crowded public transport is even worse.
I get to Alexandria and make the decision, ‘Next café I see, I’m going to stop and reassess my situation.’ I turn onto Maddox Street and spy La Cachette, (that’s French for, The Cachette). It looks simple and elegant from the outside, a warm dry refuge for this drenched bicycle adventurer.
My choice was simple, it was either a clean looking café painted black, or across the road a ‘Gourmet Food Bar.’ and in my experience, if you have to tell people that you’re gourmet, you’re not. A quick glance through the window at their pre-​warmed chinese food, menu of greasy burgers and chips confirms the gourmet lie.
So I am happy in my choice to venture into La Cachette (that’s French for La Seal).
Electronic funds transfer point of sale is available so I avoid having to head back outside to find an ATM and, given the weather, can’t help but order the big breakfast, despite my decision to cut back on the grease.
I get a soy cap to start, my third for the day, and sit down. The waiter is helpful and has a positive attitude, the food arrives and the mushrooms explode with flavour in my mouth, the bacon is oh so crispy and the sausage tastes like a sausage ought to. The only thing I’d say is that the scrambled eggs could be a little fluffier, but that’s a preference thing and not a markable quality.
Overall the food and coffee and service is amazing and I’m not even going to let the screaming baby at the adjacent table or the Kylie Minogue on the speakers ruin it.
