If you come looking for great customer service, well this isn’t the place for that. Brusque, perhaps.
But if you come looking for fish, big thumbs up. Competition grade bettas and guppies, plenty of other fish too, and a great assortment of rocks and driftwood.
The shop is a little hard to find. I took a guess as to where it was and was rewarded with a small sign leading down some stairs. It’s all pretty dodgy inside. Small and cramped, nothing flash, but that’s fine with me.
I was going for the bettas, and they’re kept in reasonable conditions, not the horrid cups and such you see in a lot of pet stores and other aquariums. You’ll find both fancy and wild types, with lots of imports from Thailand, as well as breeding pairs. You’ll also pay for it too. While they did have the odd plain veil tail, most were a bit fancier than that, often reaching $ 50 or more per fish.
Small range of tanks, this is more a place to come if you already know what you’re doing and what you want, and to get something a little out of the ordinary. But expect to pay for it being out of the ordinary too.

There’s so many varieties at Fishchick and they’re all so well-​taken care of. Sometimes I worry about the condition in pet shops that animals are kept in, but this adorable store definitely has a high standard of service.
The first time I ventured inside I was shown around by the store-​keep who knew all of the answers to my questions and even showed me how some varieties reacted to food (I can’t remember which, I’m afraid).
The two or three walls of betta fish is a brilliant start for anyone new to keeping fish, and the much larger goldfish (as big as your fists!) are my favourite. I could look at them all day and feel nothing but happy!
It can feel a little cramped inside, so do take any shopping to your car first while you’re inside.
If you need a grin, I’d go here for a moment’s quiet with these peaceful creatures. They go «blub, blub…»!

Whenever going past large aquariums or marine tanks,
I always indulge (for a split-​second) in my recurring fantasy that one day
Leonardo DiCaprio (circa 1996 Romeo and Juilet.)
will be on the other side staring back at me.
Fishchick aquatics is one such a place where I can fulfil such whims,
located sneakily at the back of Annerley arcade this is one of my
favourite little pet stores.
Among my more knowledgable friends,
I’m informed that this is one of the best places to snag
a high quality Betta (Those beautiful siamese fighting fish.)
aquatic plants and «Aquascaping“products.
Not owning a tank myself
I simply enjoy coming in and gazing at their
tanks of neon tetras, cute little sharks and bug-​eyed goldfish.
