It amazes me how clever people are at naming Restaurants. This place is a classic example — imagine a room of pony tailed Madmen all bouncing ideas until Siiiiiiimon flowers up with .“Wait… Avalon Chiiiiiiinese Restaurant !’ The seed having been planted, its not long before these well polinated minds burst bud with …‘Avalon Chinese Restaurant’ Tax Invoice for $ 870,000 is sent and off they go to grace the latest hot spot and stand around looking indifferently at other peoples pony tails. I looked it up in the SMH Good Food Guide and, contrary to the claim contended for by its door, it wasn’t there. Then I went back to my old volumes, got to 2002 and there it was! Classic Cantonese fare with a bit more — so the review claimed. Steamed oysters and live seafood. The chef used to be at Marigolds… etc. It got scored as high as 13 out of 20 but even making it into the GFG is an achievement very few burb Chinese joints can boast. In 2008 it eventually dropped out of the good book(it has been unchanged for 45 years!) but it is still really good. You know when the need for Chinese food hits it must be slaked, and this does it very nicely. I have eaten there twice in 40 years but I have had takeaway more times than I care to reveal, except to own that its a lot — a huge lot. I am very surprised that this is the first review to be frank — this place is well known and loved by locals with justification. Who doesn’t love a good Chinese Takeaway?
