Golds World of Judaica, (known until 1999 as Golds Book and Gift Company), is the Southern Hemisphere’s largest Judaica store, as well as being Australia’s main importer, wholesaler and retailer of Judaica items. It is owned by Yirmi & Miriam Goldschmiedt, prominent members of Melbourne’s Orthodox Jewish community.

The store was opened in November 1987 at 36 William Street, off the major Carlisle Street shopping strip in the Balaclava suburb of Melbourne, to service the local Jewish community. Golds quickly became the largest importer and distributor of Judaica products in Australia. In November 2000, with the both the growth of the Melbourne Jewish community and the expanding market of English-​language Jewish publications, the store relocated to larger premises at 3 William Street, which includes a carpark. The store has also serves as a hub for the community. Sold and distributed by Golds are Judaica items like Kippot, Tzitzit &Tallitot, Tefillin, Mezuzot, Shofarot and silverware.

Business Owner

Yirmi was born in Melbourne and studied at Yeshivah College until matriculation.

He then went on to learn in Yeshivos overseas, first in Manchester and then in Israel.

After settling back in Melbourne and beginning to establish his family, he and his wife took the plunge and opened their own business. Their aim was to have a Judaica bookstore comparable to other world class bookstores. His main strength in the business is his amazing knowledge of all Jewish learning. He also gives 2 Daf Yomi shiurim daily in Melbourne.
