Sorry, I think this place has considerably lowered it’s standards since people’s reviews a few years ago. Our lunch was awful. The chips were soggy and were cooked in old over used oil. The fish was like leather, and the kids sausage meals were these old two old snags that were simply sitting under the heat lamps for hours on top of a handful of chips and a cheap sugar drink made in China for $ 10? They offer to deep-fry everything, even Pizzas and Easter Eggs? Meh, Gross. Never again.

This is my favourite chip shop in Brisbane. I travel from close to Bracken Ridge to Birkdale to enjoy their delicious British Fish and Chips. Although my order this past weekend was chips(salt and vinegar a must), jumbo sausage and curry sauce!!! All of it is spot on in flavour and even smell to what i would expect from a chippie back in the UK. I also love that I can get the UK soft drinks(tango, club orange), it makes the experience perfect. The fish on the menu is cod or haddock which it what makes the dish so yummy. The batter is light and doesn’t leave that greasy horrible after taste — words from my British Mum who is here on holiday. The staff were polite and fast at getting the orders ready. There is a small undercover eating area at the front of the shop, however we jumped back into the car and headed to Wellington Point for a truely authentic fish and chips by the seaside experience. Parking is off road and just outside the take away shop. I love it and will be back!!!

I’ve eaten fish & chips on UK soil precisely once in my life so while I don’t feel qualified to comment on just how close to the ‘reel’ deal(see what I did there?) in the land of the Union Jack, I will say that the owners are operating on a cost and value ratio not of this time and it’s working. We arrived at 11:30am and there was already a line of eager punters waiting for their orders and plenty of families seated in the small outdoor dining area. While there was ample to select from on the menu, we went old school and ordered a cod & chips($ 10) each. And here’s what I mean about the cost and value ratio. Upon opening our parcels of warm, freshly cooked grub, it was clear that one cod & chips would have easily fed us both. There’s no skimping on the chips and the piece of fish was equally large. The meal itself was tasty — not too greasy and most certainly made fresh. I’d ordered vinegar on the chips but would have preferred to add this in myself. As other reviewers have noted, the service isn’t outstanding and is fairly cut and dry. But you’re not here for cheery pleasantries from the staff. This isn’t a place for calorie watching but if you’re seeking a traditional fish and chip experience like when you were a kid — it’s worth the drive out here on a Sunday. Make a day of it and hang by the sea!

Oh my gosh! Chumley’s is the best! On miserable, rainy nights, I pile the family into the car and drive 45 minutes to eat the BEST fish and chips in Brisbane. The experience of dining here is worth the drive alone. Nothing fancy, just an ordinary looking fish and chip shop in a small shopping complex in Birkdale, but I promise you will not be disappointed. I will be honest, and I guess a little blunt — the staff are rude, they really are… but you can’t get fish and chips like this anywhere else in Brisbane, believe me I’ve looked — so you just put up with the ordinary service and eat. I usually order take-away and drive around the corner to the esplanade to eat, you get that true English feel with the right weather. Prices are pretty good and there are heaps of other menu options if you are not a seafood lover.

The fish at Chumley Warners is direct from the North Atlantic — filleted and frozen immediately and exported over to Australia. Cod, Haddock and Plaice. This truly is British Fish & Chips! You have to get a side of mushy peas and curry sauce to dip your chips in. It may sound wrong, but it really is amazing and it’s the British way. And definitely have a splash of the vinegar on your chips. There are other British chip shop must-haves like pickled egg, deep-fried Mars Bar and battered sausages. They also sell pies and pasties, made to the traditional British recipe. And if you’re game, there is Scottish specialities like Haggis and Black Pudding. Try it if you dare!
