A great memory from my childhood in Sydney. I still have relatives and friends bring me chocolate macaroons when they visit Sydney, and bring them back to me in Los Angeles!

Nice little café right across from the gorgeous Bondi Beach offering your standard breakfast needs in generous serving sizes. They were seriously understaffed the day I went but the waiter showed such professionalism by keeping his warm smile.

A bunch of us were feeling pretty shabby quite early on a Monday morning. We just started walking, and ended up here. Long story short, the fella who served us seemed nearly as poorly as we felt however he managed to be friendly and professional. We all ordered food and coffee or juice. It came out fairly quickly and was pretty good. I had bacon and scrambled eggs with a coffee. All were pretty good and helped a fair bit to chase away my Monday morning shabiness. I also tried my friend’s juice. It took longer to come out but was pretty good. All up, completely satisfactory place for breakfast. Sitting outside looking over Bondi never goes astray either.

What sadness! They’ve wiped out most of the famous menu items like Chicken Soup with Matso Balls, Goulash — and all those Devine European comfort dishes in favour of a boring same ol’ coffee shop with steak n fries type menu items. This restaurant was an icon. I travelled across the city just to come for the Matso Ball soup. Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear. So sad.

If you want a completely rude and uncaring owner to potentially serve you, go ahead. We bought some pastries for take out and decided to come back minutes later to sit down. As we took out our pastries, «Suzie» comes over and tells us no we can’t, unless we pay extra! To sit and eat our food! What happened to compromise and great customer experience? This is Australia! Charge more for food and beverages for sitting in? Lame. Just lame. And another thing… I walked in and asked what a couple of pastries were and«Suzie» made me walk outside into the freezing cold to read the names of the pastries I was interested in. Makes my nerves tremble. This reminds me of all those times Gordon Ramsy destroys restaurants/cafes like this for bad service, etc. Two words. Service industry.

I’ve been going there(very occasionally) my whole life. They do great traditional Hungarian food. Best matzo ball soup around. Don’t be fooled by the name: the gelato isn’t very special. But the pastries are great. Among the best is the poppy seed roll and the strudel.

I had dinner last night at Gelato Bar, which is an odd name as it is actually a European restaurant, which features a gelato bar. Anyway I had a Beef Stroganoff, which was good but way overpriced, I enjoyed the meal, but I thought the menu in general was not interesting enough to justify the pricing. The Wine is also very expensive by both the bottle and the glass, by the time we had wine and dinner there definitely was not enough cash left in the budget for gelato. I did enjoy the meal, and the service was good, but I did not enjoy it enough to go back at those prices. I don’t mind spending that much, but I want something really impressive.

Cherry strudel cherry strudel cherry strudel! I’ve been eating cherry strudel here since I was little, our Grandma used to bring us here and the recipe has not changed in all that time. Don’t change it Gelato Bar! Sadly, for all its welcoming window cake display and homely Eastern European type dishes(matzo ball soup, veal knuckle and the like), the service here is less than wonderful. It looks so friendly and lovely but they seem to have a high turnover of backpacker staff who are possibly new to customer service or maybe just don’t care. Mind you they’ve been here for 50 years and for good reason(ahem strudel) so maybe like a grumpy old Aunt or a soup nazi they feel they’ve earned the right to not give a toss. It pains me to say a bad word about a place that makes such great CHERRYSTRUDEL, but there you have it. Maybe get your strudel to go.

Forget Gelato — that’s not what this place is about. In fact I can’t even be sure they have Gelato on the menu — confusing i know… the reason why people come to the Gelato Bar is to eat yummy yummy cakes. Situated on Campbell Parade — Sydney’s version of French Riviera, you’d be forgiven for not being able to find this café amongst all the others situated along the strip… so if you’re looking for it — here’s a tip — keep an eye out for all the cakes in the windows. They do serve food… which i’ve never tried because the only reason people go to the Gelato Bar is for dessert… and here’s their dessert menu… Now it’s fairly extensive… so before you get lost in the sugary goodness I’m going to make some suggestions… The strudels amazing — go for either apple or poppyseed… my only dissapointment is the rum ball — its looks better it tastes… Enjoy the sugar rush… Crepes (Nutella, strawberry, walnut, jam, chocolate, cream cheese, honey, banana) small 8.50, large 11.50 Gelato (chocolate, hazelnut, vanilla, coffee, lemon, raspberry) small 8.00, large 11.50 Chocolate Banana Split 10.50 Ice Cream«Sundae» 9.50 Chocolate Mousse 8.50 Summer Trifle 8.50 Fresh Fruit Salad with cream, ice cream or yoghurt 9.50 Chestnut Purée with cream 9.50 CAKESELECTION Strudels Apple 7.80 Cheese and Cherry 7.80 Cheery 7.80 Walnut 7.80 Chocolate and Hazelnut 7.80 Poppy Seed 7.80 Tortes Chocolate/Hazelnut/Coffee 7.80 Stephanian 7.80 Black Forest 7.80 Mud 7.80 Sacher 7.80 Pyramid 7.80 Grand Marnier 7.80 Macaroons Walnut /Nougat /Chocolate 7.80 Rum Ball 6.50 Grenada 7.50 Chocolate Éclair 7.50 Slices Fruit slice 7.80 Apple 7.80 Cheese 7.80 Apricot and Apple 7.80 Poppy Seed, Walnut 7.80 Bishop Bread 7.80 Vanilla 7.80 Cherry 7.80 Cheese and Cherry 7.80 Flourless Chocolate Brownie 7.00 Pastries Cheese Pocket 6.00 Cinnamon Snail 7.00 Chocolate Croissant 6.00 Palm Leaf 6.00 Almond Horseshoe 6.50 Poppy Seed Bun/Walnut Bun 7.00 Biscuits — linzer/coconut/almond 3.00 Twists — cinnamon/poppy/almond 5.50
