The Queens Plaza foodcourt is easily one of the most uninspiring in the city. It just seems like such large open air with little atmosphere. I was looking for something quick so I decide on Suncrane, the sole Japanese takeaway shop in the foodcourt. Service was pretty good, although the guys in front of me took literally 5 minutes placing their order ._. I ordered Fish Katsu Curry. It was pretty good, the curry sauce was probably the best consistency I’ve ever had. If you ever have the displeasure of being in the Queens Plaza foodcourt, pay Suncrane a visit.

While it is acceptable for a food court, both their soy & tonkotsu were quite disappointing, with weak broths and unnecessary additions of broccoli and ginger.

Not really feeling like the Oporto my husband was craving at the time, I decided to give the soup and noodle bowls offered by nearby Suncrane a closer inspection. I’m so glad I did. I was nearly settled on what I was going to order until I spotted a freestanding brochure holder at the end of the counter. It modestly advertised that today’s special was tonkotsu ramen. I was sold. After a short wait of about 10 minutes, my wonderfully fragrant and steaming bowl of tonkatsu ramen arrived. I have to admit that I honestly expected mediocre food court fare and was totally blown away when I started to delve into the rich pork-bone broth accented with sesame seeds and just the right amount of pickled ginger, all topped with a nice portion of sliced pork. It was just amazing – I savoured every bite and was left wanting more even though I was full. Actually, I ended up ordering a second bowl as takeaway so I could have it again for dinner at home! I can’t speak for the other menu offerings, but the tonkotsu ramen deserves pride of place on the overhead menu rather than being hidden away on a sheet of A4 printer paper!

I’m constantly surprised by how an up-market shopping centre like QueensPlaza could have such an uninspired food court. Suncrane is usually my go-to place when I eat at QueensPlaza and for some reason I keep returning despite the fact I am constantly disappointed. Because I’m always in the mood for noodle soup, I usually go for the spicy beef noodles. The rice noodles are always pleasant enough, but the beef is shredded from the cheapest cuts and the stock is grainy, which makes it unpleasant to drink by the spoonful. My brother tried the chicken and rice and was hoping for something akin to Hanaichi, but the flavours were all wrong and the rice overcooked. He couldn’t finish it. If Suncrane tweaked some of their recipes, they could be onto something good.
