History

Established in 2011.

The Grosvenor On George History

1881 — Constructed during economic boom

1888 — Castlemaine Brewery and Quinlan Gray & Co took over the lease, they would later be known as Castlemaine Perkins, Queensland’s most famous brewer. The company had first released its «Castlemain XXX Sparkling Ale» to the public in 1878, and in the 1880’s another ‘X’ was added to the brand and the XXXX trademark was registered in the 1890’s. Therefore The Grosvenor On George was one of the first XXXX hotels in Brisbane.

1953 — Margaret Olley painted a mural in the saloon bar. It took Olley more than 3 months and was paid 300 pounds to depict various Brisbane street scenes from 1882 to 1953. This artwork was eventually valued at between $ 250,000 and $ 500,000.

1985 — Margaret Olley’s mural was destroyed, and much of the interior severely altered after McDonald’s purchased the building in

2001 — It was returned to a hotel

2011 — Current hoteliers took out a 30 year lease on the building
