There is a wide breadth of bicycle owners and riders(which I’ve been told are not the same), so trying to accommodate them all can be a dangerous and costly move. Lygon cycles makes no apologies for the lack of simple and single speeds found within its walls(and on the street out the front, you should see them run with a tarp when it rains), and focuses much more on the lycra side of the bicycle world. I did get my mountain bike serviced there a while back and things turned out for the best. I’d had a flat tyre that I’d tried time and time again to fix to no avail(I lost a lot of shack factor for that one), so dropped it off for a service and to point out. The guys turned out to be really helpful, discovered the piece of wire lodged in the tyre that I would never have found, and quite approachable about all things bicycle. If you’re looking for your first give this place a go, even just to get an understanding of what you want.

My dealings with Lygon Cycles have ceased but only really because I moved from the area. These folk provide the basic services that any bicycle shop should, they do it with good grace, little drama and at pretty reasonable rates. They laughed at my bike a bit(it’s an old banger) but would happily help me out with advice and service requirements in spite of the fact that they probably really wanted to sell me a fancy and expensive bike off the rack — that was never going to happen. This is the more lycra leaning bike shop, so if you’ve got an aversion to men smuggling budgies in their tights, give it a wide berth. They have a huge amount of stock, which is largely out of this bloke’s price range, and they seriously know their shit. I did have a house mate who had some below average dealings with these people, but for me they were always gracious and helpful.

I went to Lygon Cycles with a broken axle rod on my bike, and I am sure you understand I went there with trepidation — because a broken axle rod sounds serious to me. Well they fixed it for an easy $ 20 and even tightened my brakes and greased up my chain as an added bonus. The guys at Lygon Cycles really are friendly and happy to help you with any advice you may need. I also like the fact that they offer three options of bike service — bronze, silver or gold — so you know and understand what level of service you are paying for. Because between you and me I am sick of paying to have my bike serviced and paying upwards of $ 70 only to find that some places will literally just tighten your brakes and grease your chain for this amount of money(all whch these guys did for free for me). I also like the fact that they tend to service the bikes pretty quickly usually getting it back to you the next day. If you are in the market for a new bike — they do have a rather small range. But it is worth checking out and I have found that the advice they give at Lygon Cycles is far more tailored to fitting you to the right bike rather than trying to sell you a dream. They also have a range of second hand bikes for sale if you want something a bit cheaper.

Lygon certainly cycles. Every second person in the hood has a bike and I’m proud as punch to live amongst so many two-wheelers. There’s nothing special about my bike but I do love it, and I like to know that other bike lovers are helping me to maintain my bike and that’s why I like to bring my bike to these guys. Everyone who works here are cyclists and you can see that they’re pretty passionate about it. It’s a small shop so there’s probably not as much stock here as there are at larger stores, but they’ve got all the essentials and you will find whatever you need for your bike here. And if you don’t have a bike, you can buy one here.
