I got a fresh HOT loaf of bread from here today. It was amazing. Dense and soft. The staff were very friendly too. I’ll be back to try the fancy selection of pastries and cakes. I’ll have to go for a jog afterwards!

Had a burgundy beef pie, beautiful meat very flavourful and tender with crispy beautiful rich pastry. I am not yet to try the hot beverages but that is next to do on my to do list!

I think one visit is not enough. Went for Brunch this morning, Sunday. Old building, not too much renovation, keeping some its vintage features; footpath, front room and the backyard garden with a big communal table. The front dining area, where the action is can be a little squeezy, not a place for private intimate conversation, to the two young ladies seating behind me, we can hear you. From the Panini Bacon & Egg, Breakfast Pie, Choc & Raspberry Brulee, OJ, Coffee all good, but we can’t try them all, too many good things on offering. Simple Recipe, quality ingredients, prepared well, on the premise, just have to come back again to enjoy this unique vintage venue. Enjoy my fellow foodies!

Good coffee and food here! I no longer work nearby, but am sure to pop back when I’m in the area! Super!

Great pies and cakes. I strongly recommend this if you enjoy a pie for brekkie or have a sweet tooth. Coffee goes alright as well. I’d walk a fair distance to come here.

Great coffee and chai latte, delicious rolls, soups and cakes, and fantastic front of shop staff. What more could you ask for?

I’m not sure what to think about Sugardough. I’ve picked up food to go from here twice now and have had two vastly different experiences. The first time I came in the staff were friendly and helpful. I grabbed a pie to eat on the run and it was absolutely delicious. So as I hungrily sat on the tram on the way home from work today I just had to jump off to grab something for lunch. The staff were very abrupt despite there only being a couple of other customers in there. Deciding that I’d prefer to take my lunch to go with service like that I picked a pie and couldn’t say no to a Bee Sting, which I hadn’t eaten one of in a very long time. The pastry on the beef & mushroom pie was far from crispy and inside was not much more than a grey liquid with a couple of mushrooms thrown in for texture. The Bee Sting was not much better and it was quite dry with hardly any custard in the middle. I’m torn about coming back here again with so many other options around, but with so many other great reviews I’m hoping that I just arrived at an unfortunate off-hour.

There are so many reasons to love this little café/bakery. Whether it is their wide range of pies, big breakfast menu, local produce or if you just want a coffee to take away. All of these services comes of course with fast and efficient customer service. Tip; Don’t know if it is suitable for winter but try to use their back garden, it is super awesome.

Brunswick is nice, just because you can find plenty of these little cafes, and this one is just great. Went there just once so I’ll keep it with 4 stars for now. Had a egg and bacon tart(so healthy) which was as tasty as it looked good. Served with a small salad and salsa sauce. Yum Finished with a crème brûlée, served in a pastry, like a tart. I had loads of crème brûlée back in France and it was the first time I had one in a pastry like that. So it baked a bit differently I suppose, the texture was not perfect, but the taste was still pretty good. Nice and friendly service, and an amazing sparkling apple juice. Makes me thirsty just t think about it.

Great place to get your cornetto alla crema and cappuccino at breaky time(I define this period of the day very flexibly). Me and my girl like to pop in on a Thursday morning before heading off to reality. Service can sometimes be a bit stand-offish, but I’m willing to push through that particular barrier.

Worth a stop for breakfast. Had a chocolate croissant with cappuccino. My wife had a homemade granola. Everything was great! There are too many baked goods to list including breakfast sandwiches that are made fresh daily, avocado used in breakfast sandwich looked like it used a whole avocado without over powering the eggs and ham, and they even have doughnuts that are baked fresh in the morning. They only use green eggs — dont know that means, but the eggs are fresh and sell them at the store. All breads looked perfectly baked and not dried — and all the breakfast and lunch items seemed to have unique twist to familiar items. For instance they have five different baked pies that had combo like tomato and spinach to eggs, ham, etc., but looked original and unique — u buy by slices. Each piece looked enormous. orange juice was squeezed fresh — or it tasted that way anyway. Seems to use local market items in everything they do. Little expensive and slow in service, and not Australian friendly like most places I came to admire in this country, but it is adequate. Cappuccino was good — not great, but not bad — better than Starbucks on any given day. The constant flow of local patrons on the way to work, or eat in to read papers, this is a little local gem worth cherishing. I will be back fr more.

As far as bakeries go in Melbourne this is about as good as it gets. You can taste the love they put in the food here, the pies, the pastries, the bread, it’s hard to go wrong really. I get the feeling this place has been around for years.

The café is so very small, and the long line of customers leading out onto the street doesn’t help either. They have all sorts of savoury and sweet goods, as well as a small menu. Stick to the baked items that’s where all the tastiness can be found. Especially the sweet stuff. The coffee here is alright, not great, so I prefer to order their authentic Italian hot chocolate which has the consistency of pure melted chocolate. So what you do is, grab a croissant(and almond one if you want something extra special) and dip that bad boy straight it. It’s heaven I tell you, heaven.

There are but a few places that make fine sourdoughs in this town and Sugardough is undoubtedly one of them. In fact, there are three other great bread shops within about a 500 metre stretch of Sugardough, and then there’s nought for miles(?!?). Where Sugardough stands up is through the consistency and crunch of their breads. They don’t over produce, so you won’t be getting left over stock at the end of the day. This can mean that they won’t have exactly the variety you’re after, but you know it’s fresh and that’s of far more importance. They also do great(and consistently so) coffee, cakes, pizza slices and have some of the best pies in Melbourne. Actually, it’s the pies that get me going back now that I don’t live in the area — they’ve still got a bit of a grip on me…

Sugardough Panifico & Patisserie is like a little piece of the country in the middle of East Brunswick. The adorable little café on Lygon Street is worlds away from the northern suburb surrounds, with old fashioned blackboards listing mouthwatering pies, pastries and cakes. I’m always a fan of warm industrial brick and pressed tin, so it goes without saying that I find the interior of Sugardough delightful, but on many visits I’ve been forced to get take away and eat my treats in the park because Sugardough gets seriously packed on weekends. Avoid the prime times of breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea if you want to get a seat. I’m not sure what that leaves — morning tea, maybe? The casual set-up means there’s no table service — you need to order at the counter — which makes it easy when you’re eating with a few friends as there’s no messy bill splitting at the end. Now for the baked goods: wow. The butter chicken pie is even better than it sounds. The breakfast pie is another outstanding savoury. It’s quite literally a pie with breakfast things in it — kind of like a quiche with ham, spinach and tomato layered over the eggs — yum! But Sugardough’s sweets are my favourite. They do classic teacakes, orange and poppy seed and pretty much anything else your sweet tooth might desire. Don’t miss the hot chocolate!

Bread baked fresh every day, the smell fills the bakery and keeps it warm in those winter months. It lines the baskets and cabinets behind the counter as several move behind making coffee and waiting tables. There are a hand full of tables in the front room, half of which are taken half the time and all are filled to the brim on a Saturday/Sunday morning. Those out the very front fill with those with pets, watching trams and cyclists. With a wonderful garden out the back, one can almost forget the surrounding streets and bustle of the city. The menu is full of safe staples with twists, an additional condiment here and there to your pie, with several sugary baked goods on show behind glass back at the counter. Everything is good, it’s worth stopping and spending time here, and takeaway goods sometimes seem to take longer than eating in.

This little patisserie is popular — very popular — and there are hundreds of doughy, sugary reasons why. It could be the rustic loaves and pastry filled shop-front window that draws passers-by in for a closer look, and then it could be the country-home interior inviting you to take a seat at one of the delicate tables. What it most definitely is will be the cake-muffin-pie-orgy of a display cabinet running the length of the café that hypnotises everyone who enters with promises of sweet, creamy treats that taste even better than they look. This place isn’t just for the sweet of tooth though. There are delectable hot, savoury munchies — spicy Malaysian pumpkin tart, spanakopita with salad and homemade chutney, and breakfast pies, to name a few. Don’t forget to check the specials board, and when the cosy café is just too full to accommodate you, place your order at the counter then mosey on out to the back garden for some sunny, courtyard action.
