Appalling service at this café the owner always seems to close at times earlier than indicated. Not very welcoming therefore I take my business elsewhere.

Cornelius is a bit of a diamond tucked away in a small, busy yet cosy street reminiscent of something you might see in a European city. My bosses, Europeans themselves and with a love of fine food, took me here for lunch to celebrate my birthday a few weeks back and the special of risotto with scollops and chorizo seemed like a strange combo until I tasted it. Kind of a surf ‘n’ turf with a difference and it was delicious. Always busy, even on a Monday afternoon after the lunch rush, the locals have voted with their feet and the cheese, muffins and cake on offer looked amazing. The staff were really friendly, supported by their claim they paid for their Christmas party through tips last year so they must be doing something right! Well worth a visit if you’re in the eastern suburbs.

What started as a simple cheese store has now become a favourite haunt of many in the Eastern Suburbs. Tucked down Maling Road Cornelius breaks the mould for the quaint road with a great atmosphere and even better food. Open everyday except Monday this little restaurant is a gem for breakfast or lunch. Owner Matt has created a unique and memorable place where you can relax with coffee and cake, try some excellent produce, or have a rich and delicious meal. Just about everything on the premises is worthwhile, but you can’t leave without trying some sort of cheese from the extensive local and imported selection. The tasting plates are wonderful and make sure you’ve been briefed on the specials before making any decisions. Some of the best dishes are the four-cheese leek and sweet potato ravioli, and the Angus Steak sandwich. Cornelius also has an alcohol license so ask Matt for recommendations with your meal, or for a special occasion. Just taking the time to have a look at the imported and local produce is worthwhile stopping off. You’ll be exposed to some of the best cheese and wine around.
