We popped into Arkwright for a quick breakfast on the way to work recently — and what a find! Having been on the lookout for a place that offers more than just muffins to go with your morning coffee, AND is open before 8, finding Arkwright was a real godsend. The décor was relaxed and homely, the atmosphere calm and inviting, and the menu contained an interesting range of breakfast options. The coffee was top-notch. Plenty of locals and tradies were popping in to grab a coffee or a loaf of bread, and that didn’t undermine the terrific, personalised service we received. After living in New York for seven years, returning to North Fitzroy and finding that this gem has opened up right in our ‘hood was a dream — we’ll definitely be back.

This little place is a perfect hybrid of Melbourne coffee spot and British teashop. So good for a morning takeaway coffee in North Fitzroy! They’re always fast and friendly. I manage to stop myself from getting a croissant with every visit, but they’re 100% worth tasting at some point! There’s also always lots of lovely cakes/pastries/breads sitting there, and I’m certain I’ll have to try them all eventually. There’s also a little menu with some breakfast/lunch options, though I’ve yet to try any. It’s tiny and cute and quaint, but they have just renovated and added one or two more tables, so hopefully you’ll be able to squeeze in! Worth dropping by for cake + coffee. Right next to the tram stop!
