Castledare Miniature Railway is a place for the young, who, thanks to Thomas the Tank Engine, absolutely love trains, and the old, who can actually ride in these miniature trains. There are different locomotives to ride on, some diesel, some steam and each ride is beautiful — to ride through the wetlands and enjoy the clickety clack of the train is awesome. It may sound boring, especially if you either don’t have kids or you have no interest in trains, but somehow there is something fascinating about these not too tiny trains. It may have something to do with the fact that I had never riden in something like this before… If you would rather not ride the trains, then there is plenty of shade around the Niana Station, which operates on the first Sunday of every month, except January from 11.00am until 3.30pm. The Wilson Park Station operates on the third Sunday of each month from 10.00 until 2.00pm. There is also a small shop there where you can buy hot food, cold drinks and treats. Entry to Castledare is free, and you can purchase individual tickets for rides or family tickets. Your best bet is to check the website regarding whether the trains are running or not.
