A part of my morning ritual. This gangbusters little deli/salad/sandwich bar is located underneath the trains at Circular Quay facing Custom House. The staff are particularly lovely(which is impressive as they are there from 5am) and have got sandwich making down to an art. But it’s not all sandwiches — they also do pastas, soups, drinks, and a whole lot of healthy delights. And it’s cheap.

Right behind Circular Quay station(on the other side of the adjacent wall, actually), lies Quay Deli. Here, you will fulfill all your fresh deli meat needs, as well as your cold-salad needs(pasta, potato, Caesar, you name it), your pie/quiche needs, and your bread needs. They also have other cold snacks, like salad wraps, lentil-patty wraps, and something called Turkish toast, which I haven’t yet sampled, but I vow to. The attendants are really friendly and lovely, especially the one who doesn’t speak much English. He’s adorable, and helpful, and absolutely does not let language barriers get in the way. I tried their potato salad, with more than a little trepidation, because I usually detest all cold salads. I like my food piping hot, thankyou. But their potato salad is scrumptious. I almost ordered another one, but decided at the last minute to reign in my inner pig. Regretting that now. What I wouldn’t do for some potato salad.

It’s all or nothing when it comes to food at Cicular Quay. You can either fork out for a magnificent meal at one of the many fine-dining spots along the waterfront, or go to a greasy spoon or Maccas. The only in-between is City Extra– which is just adequate– or secret gem Quay Deli. Here you can treat yourself to a delicious toasted sandwich or hearty lentil and veg soup for around $ 5, AMAZING vege burger for $ 7 or choose from one of their healthy salads or freshly made sandwiches or baguettes. This is good food for anywhere, let alone at Circular Quay where prices are automatically tripled as establishments assume tourists don’t know they’re being ripped off. A small family-owned Deli with charming staff and great food.

This is a little beauty. It is tucked away in the Circular Quay train station so you can easily not know it’s there. Suss it out, as it is well worth it. There are healthy bowls of take away soup priced at $ 6 and rolls and wraps that look really fresh available too. It is a gourmet deli and they start at the peep of dawn at 5am every morning. How’s that for dedication? The business is family owned and run and that’s what they are known for, food that is not commercialised and is hearty — Nick is the manager and he says that all food is created on the premises. Muffins are also available at $ 3 each.
