Claremont jetty is a bit of a «lights off» kind of place. Being a bit of a fishing enthusiast I jumped at the chance to go crabbing with my house mates.. . without a boat we were left with limited options and as I hadn’t been to the Claremont Jetty before the choice was made. Upon approach the smell of the Swan river congured up an uneasy feeling in my stomache. The purity of the water is questionable to say the least and I still have to do some serious«mind over matter» exercises before I feel comfortable ingesting anything from that river. Hopping out with our crab pots and making our way down the dilapidated jetty, the old wooden planks were littered with puffer fish — I half expected to find a 3 eyed fish(Simpsons inspired) with them! We were there for about 4 hours and the wind chill at 10: pm cut straight to the bone. The size of the crabs was also a bit disheartening, we threw back more than we could keep and the measuring ruler continued to dwarf our catches. Then the river turned on it’s crazy and the crabbing expedition took a few pages out of Dr Suess. We caught a 73 cm cod in one of the pots, then our fellow crabbers caught a starfish and a small unidentified fish(only 2 eyes, but I double checked!) Claremont Jetty has a beautiful view across the river(if you can look beyond the decaying fish) and while it was worth the trip, whether any of us could have eaten our spoils if we’d caught it all during the day and seen the water, remains unknown.
