Run by Moreland City, the MoreArt Public Art Show presents indoor and outdoor works from local artists. With a focus on engaging with public space, artists use various sites along the Upfield Train Line to re-imagine our urban landscape. This idea of the ‘public space’ has always interested me — who owns public space(yes, I know it is public and technically, we the public own it) and who gets to choose what the public sees? So I was quite interested in what sort of work would be presented. I signed up for one the tours — the People’s Choice and headed to the Lux Foundry. The MoreArt bike tours are run by the Melbourne bike organisation, the Squeaky Wheel. Although slightly disorganised at the start, we were finally on our way and visiting sites along the way. My overall thoughts? Some of the works were pretty cool and some just average. The works I particularly enjoyed were the ones where the artists came to talk about the work. You get a sense of the work as more than just some tangible object, but as something that has been holistically created with a story, the environment, and the public use of space, with all of this in mind. I like the MoreArt idea of art in public space and people riding, walking around to see it. However, there is potential to do more.
