Had an incredible dinner here this evening as part of the Melb food and wine festival! Travelled from Ballarat for it … Will be back! Thanks so much for an amazing evening!

Visiting from Los Angeles. Without a doubt I can say best shisha/hookah and best Ethiopian food I have ever had. The store owner Ibrahim is super cool and we spent at least an hour in conversation. Will definitely come back here.

So it’s come to that time of year and the lovely one and I want to find something we’ve never eaten for the weekend. Ethiopian comes to mind. I didn’t think they had enough food to have delicacies but that just shows how ignorant I am about food. Close to the city end of Smith Street, Konjo is an unassuming place that you may almost think was closed were it not for the people sitting in the window. The interior is low light and intimate, and quiet when we enter and the handful of times we’ve been back. We’re served by a lovely french lady that explains the food and how you eat it. With an almost tapas style eating, the servings are a large sourdough pancake and array of toppings, pickles and dips. The huge pancake is torn into smaller pieces as dipped and enjoyed at your leisure. Some servings are made for sharing and we made use of that, spending a lovely night amongst the light music and simple artworks and knick knacks of the interior. As it turns out, the french woman and her husband own the place, and is more than happy to talk about how it come to be here and what must be the same conversation every time — Ethiopian food in Melbourne? Wow!
