I AMSOABOUTTHIS. When you are starving but don’t need anything *too* fancy, maybe you’re in a hurry or just want a casual lunch while bargain hunting on Smith Street, Trang is your one and only destination. It doesn’t look like much from the outside(or from the inside for that matter) but their Vietnamese Rolls are AH-MAY-ZING. I always go for the crispy pork roll with extra chilli. It is enormous(quite literally the size of your head) and you will definitely have to sit down to eat it — this is not a walk-and-talk lunch sandwich. There are only two tables and they are both outside(which can be a bit rough on a summer day) so I recommend grabbing one to go and sitting in a nearby park or just scoffing it down ashamedly in your car. It’s Smith Street, you’ll be fine. FYI no booze available, just water and soft drinks in bottles from the fridge.

Finally tried this place out. I had read that they did good vegan/vegetarian salad roll options. I tried the eggplant tempura and it was delicious. Eggplant was slightly warm and very soft. Lots of salad and chilli. Good value at only $ 5.50. Will be back to try other vegan options.

Bánh mì, the King of sandwiches. The Alpha. The Omega. The George Clooney of bread filled delights. Once you’ve tried a bánh mì, you’ll forsake all sangas in their favour. Trang Bakery & Café offers a myriad of options when it comes to filling your white or brown crusty roll. There’s no tricked up trendy items here, but they do take it a notch above your traditional bánh mì shop with the likes of freshly carved pork belly and sliced chicken breast. You can still get Vietnamese“pâté” and«mayonnaise»(I use quotation marks only because they hardly resemble their namesake) and loads of crunchy pickly veggies along with some not-so-usual additions like roasted red capsicum paste and fried shallots. The staff here are patient and will step you through the sandwich assembly process asking if you want this or that if you’re not sure what you’re after. The fact that the whole thing costs less than a fiver is extraordinary. Pro tip: On a nice day, try and score one of the few tables out front to enjoy your sandwich. Trust me, you’ll want to sit down for this.
