Three of us decided we’d go for Indian food and in Crows Nest there are at least five to choose from — all with pretty darn good offerings. So we were on our way making a bee line on the Pacific Highway to one of my fave Indian eateries — the Malabar and I was looking forward to their lovely dosai lentil pancakes when the word ‘Nepalese’ caught our eye. A blackboard sign out front shouted 3 courses for $ 26. Hmmm tempting. Our foodie friend from Adelaide was super keen and so peeking inside and seeing it did not look very crowded we imagined us getting great service and quick food. And yes happy to say that’s exactly what happened. The first course we were served the most delectable little dumplings with a gorgeous tangy creamy spicy sauce — so fresh and unique — never had anything like this before. Seems like we’ve stumbled into something good I thought. So good in fact that I could not stop myself licking the plate — just like my mother told me not to. How could I resist one last taste before the waiter came to take away the entrée plates. The mains arrived presented in a colony of bowls — the wonderful dark aromatic goat curry, the golden coloured spicy saucy chicken curry and a crazy muted coloured dhal — very soupy and more like a broth. And wholemeal roti piping hot and rice too dotted with green peas. Superb combination of tastes. We ate the lot. Perfect size portions and left us with a teeny bit of room for the dessert — the amazing Carrot Pudding. So creamy and sweet with the grated carrot adding a texture that was totally different to anything I’ve had before. Everything about Jatra was great — friendly service, beautiful food, good size servings and value for money. We’ll be back.
