Beauchamp Hotel

I went here for an event they were hosting that may have been above their usual numbers. None the less, the three bartenders on duty were bloody hopeless. One of the managers had to step in after 15 min of me watching the bartenders move slowly, inefficiently and serve people out of order. She was able to take care of me quickly at least. The second star is for her and the fact they have an Adams family pinball machine in the upstairs. Beware the mildew stench of the downstairs basement!

First: this is not a hotel, but a bar cum restaurant? Restaurant is stretching it: they serve a number of plates like a pub or a bistro would. Mind you: it’s all pretty straightforward but not bad. And also the prices are relatively — for Sydney — OK. The interior is attractive, reminding one of art deco although the light is pretty bad. I have to get new reading glasses after every visit. Staff is amazingly friendly.

We ordered the Lamb tenderloin, they substituted it with beef with out notice or explanation. That was probably the most insulting experience I have ever had in a restaurant.
There is no service. You order at the bar, gather your drinks on your own, take a number and they plop a plate in front of you. Btw, this is typical for Sydney, high prices, no service. Considering we didn’t get the food we ordered or service, I’m not sure what we were paying for? Shelter?
The saving grace was the friendly bar tender and the nice atmosphere. I don’t know who is managing this restaurant but this venue could be so much more, it doesn’t nearly live up to initial promise.

First things first: you pronounce it «beach-​um». As in, «Let’s go to the beach and then, um, The Beauchamp.»
I love pulling up a chair outside or in the big open windows on a sunny weekend afternoon and watching the world go by. (Sometimes a traffic-​congested noisy world, but still…) The atmosphere is pretty relaxed and low-​key, with a bunch of couches inside and a pool table on offer. There’s also a terrace bar with courtyard upstairs.
Opened as the Ice Hotel in 1867, The Beauchamp actually got its current name in 1900 after a 26-​year-​old English dude who was the Earl of Beauchamp and Governor of NSW (way to make the rest of us feel like underachievers). (For the bookworms, apparently he was also the inspiration for Lord Marchmain in Evelyn Waugh’s ‘Brideshead Revisted’.)
If you’ve spent the day beating your credit card along Paddington’s Oxford Street shopping strip, this is a great place to drop by and recharge.

This is a great little pub and very different to the ones 150m up the road at Taylor Square! Its great for that catch up with a friend over a nice cold beer and it has the laidback atmosphere you want from a pub but with a touch of Paddington in there. You can sit near the large open shutter windows or sit outside on the pavement.
For me this pub is always a precursor to a more exciting venue or a movie at the Verona, so I never stay here too long, but I think I will try and stay next time. Especially when i’m looking for a relaxing rather than a pumping night.

Living very close to The Beauchamp Hotel is a blessing in disguise, as It’s a little bit of everything, that friend you never remember to call, but is always a good time when you finally meet up.
Daily the vibe here is a place for food and drinks, uncomplicated, nice menu, friendly staff, and reasonable prices. It’s not uncommon to see some pub locals here during the day, but it doesn’t distract from the ‘people watching’ culture, a place to relax with a coffee (replace coffee with beer)
As the sun hides away, the vibe changes to a cheaper night hub to start of your city debauchery. It’s a middle-​man to get into the mood for the night ahead, although many times, it’s turned out that the vibes so good, we end up spending more time there, and the night works itself out.
Upstairs the courtyard is relaxing, and the bartenders are attentive, and respectful, take a seat on the comfy couches, and relax in the cosy atmosphere of the Beach-​ump

The Beauchamp Hotel on the corner of Oxford Street and South Dowling Street just near Taylor Square is a tidy pub where you can have a drink, have a nice meal and watch the masses go by.
If you do want to see a sea of people walking by, the best place to do that would be on one of the few outside tables or one of the tables inside that look onto the streets. You never know who or what you might see.
If you want a break from the outside world then don’t worry as you can escape that either in the street level bar or head upstairs to the tranquillity of the beer garden.
For the record, my companion and I watch the traffic of people walk by for a while before heading upstairs to escape those exact same traffic of people in the beer garden. It seems a few have decided to do this as well.
It’s a nice place with friendly staff and the food is quite good here too.

The Beauchamp Hotel, pronounced «Beech’um», ye trust me that will come in handy when you’re telling all your friends to come meet you. Okay so The Beauchamp Hotel is right on the cusp of paddington and the city, and funnily enough this can be seen as an accurate metaphor. For you see, it is a great place to have a few pre-​drinks after a day shopping but before you hit the city where the real night life begins.
But don’t be fooled, it’s not your average-​joe pub. It has two floors, both with their own regal theme and a cute little courtyard for the summer evenings… or so smokers don’t have to forced to congregate outside in a way that thrusts their addiction into the limelight.
On the first floor, known as ‘the main bar’ is a great place to grab a bite in the day. The menu is awesome and the manager recommends the grilled salmon with pesto and white wine risotto. Told you it wasn’t your average bar! Of course it’s doesn’t skimp out on the classic bar food. Steak, fish and chips and wedges can all be found, just with a touch of class and fantastic ingredients.
The Terrace Bar on the second floor is where the evenings take off. Candle light tables, couches, pool table and big windows overlooking Oxford Street. Chatting with a few of the bartenders, they vouch for the great vodka and whiskey selection. You can have a classic vodka, lime and soda or you can opt to sip on one of the top-​shelf whiskeys that can cost up to $ 25 for a shot. It all depends of how you’re feeling, if you’ve had a good week at work and feel like spoiling yourself I would recommend the full package, grab some of the tasty olives for starters, some chips for sharing a spicy chicken salad so it is oh-​so much sweeter when you guzzle down one of their premium vodkas.
It is not the cheapest of places but every now and then it’s worth beginning your night in style.

This place has a pretty healthy, woody sort of feel — if that thats a legitimate «feeling» at all.
A pretty comfortable place at a table, on a stool at the bar, or on the couches out of the way and somewhere a bit quieter. Friendly bar staff, and almost a family sort of feel during the day, it’s a pretty homely place that doesn’t lack in a certain suave décor and vibe.
Down the quieter end of Oxford street too, so maybe you can get a bit out of the drunkard sort of vibe and more into a sophisticated one. But then, it is still a pub on a street corner. Anyway, it’s a place I’d like to go after work with mates, so me thinks it’s a success.
