I had the french toast with chicken, bacon, egg and salad. It came out in decent time and for the price wise, very worthed it! The chicken is succulent, fried perfectly and tasted soooo niceeee. Would definitely come back for this chicken! The ambience of the restaurant is good, staffs were okay butttttt the fairy floss machine is STILLBROKEN!!! Could just get a back up fairy floss machine from target or something? We ended up not ordering their drinks — had water instead.

If a toy box somehow became a full service café that served fried chicken and bubble tea, this would be Shark Bites Toast. It’s the most colourful venue I’ve been to for a while, full of unique quirk and whimsical menu items that totally divert from modern hipster trends. We visited this Taiwanese restaurant chain on a Monday morning, half an hour after it opened for business(11:30). There was only one other occupied table so we quickly settled down, fetching ourselves some menus from the nearby service counter. What immediately became apparent is that this sort of food is… well, a little unusual for the average Western Australian. The menu was predominantly fusion(American Taiwanese, if that’s a thing) with lots of peanut butter toast, cotton candy shakes, grilled cheese, waffles and a few Mexican items such as quesadillas(served with minced basil chilli chicken) and guacamole, most of which were also served with… toast. It’s in the title, after all. Even the ‘fried chicken and chips’ breakfast comes with both peanut butter toast and buttered toast alongside some chilli dipping sauce(oh, and seasonal fruit). I really don’t get it, but you know what? This thing is BIG in Taiwan. They’ve got 53K likes on Facebook and over fifty thousand check-ins. So they must be doing something right. So back to our visit. We ordered two baskets of fried chicken and chips, both of which came with ketchup and sweet chilli dipping sauce. For drinks, we chose a fresh ‘raw’ beet, lemon and apple juice(disappointingly, the cotton candy maker was being repaired so we couldn’t try the Cotton Candy lemonade), a black Earl Grey bubble tea and a fruit smoothie from the seasonal menu. Despite being one of two occupied tables in the large restaurant, the fruit smoothie was forgotten by the wait staff, though the rest of the drinks arrived in a reasonable time frame. The chicken was hot, crisp and juicy, accompanied by ultra crispy chips(my partner remarked that they were so crispy, the ‘potato’ disappeared from the middle) and the advertised dipping sauces. Unusually, we had to admit that the food looked EXACTLY like the images in the visual menu, right down to drawing a little«S» in the ketchup with squeezy mustard. I mean that in a positive sense; they replicated the plating, colouring and distribution of food to the letter. That’s gotta be a skill. The drinks were tasty, with fresh ingredients and lots of ice(perfect for Perth’s present heatwave). The bubble tea was just sweet enough, with tapioca pearls that had just been made that morning. All in all, we really enjoyed our experience at Shark Bites Toast. It’s refreshing to visit a venue that’s unabashedly different from present hospitality trends. Despite not quite understanding the construction of many dishes(my partner remarked, ‘…it’s like a kid decided to put all of their favourite things together on one plate’) the food was cooked well, whilst offering a snapshot into Taiwanese youth culture and their sense of fun. A big thumbs up to the smiling staff behind this new Vic Park venture. A little note to future visitors: if the staff at Shark Bites Toast seem to gloss over your discussion of dietary specifications, I don’t think it’s because they don’t care but rather because they may not understand. I attempted to discuss whether the bubble tea came in different flavours and the girl at the register just repeated ‘milk bubble, bubble tea?” back to me several times before I gave up. Hopefully they may soon recruit some staff with better comprehension to meet the needs of Aussie customers.

I saw a picture on Instagram of the cotton candy smoothie and I have been wanting to go ever since then. I found the service quite disappointing. I asked a couple of questions about ingredients in the drink I wanted because I have allergies and the girl behind he counter just smiled and giggled. I asked again and told her I had allergies. People who do no take allergies seriously frustrate me, this is completely dangerous, especially in the food industry. She did answer my questions after I reiterated my questions and explained my reasons. We waited for about 15 minutes for our first drink to arrive despite there only being 2 other tables(with 2 people at each) in the restaurant. The cotton candy strawberry smoothie was taken to another table and one of the girls seemed annoyed at the girl who brought it out and said something to her, pointing at our table. We had to wait another 5 minutes for the second drink. The mango drink I had was really great. I think it was tasty and not overly sweet. N had the cotton candy strawberry smoothie and enjoyed it. I won’t be rushing back as the service was average at best.

Shark Bites Toast is very roomy and has a play area for children. The ambiance of the place is fun and exiting. Unfortunately the food is only average. Unless you are a homesick Taiwanese who visits this restaurant to reminisce the feeling of being in Taipei then you probably wouldn’t be too keen on revisiting this establishment.

Seems like a cool place, great location. But the food was quite poor. We had a chicken burger and it tasted like fish. Perhaps the fish is fried in the same oil as the chicken. Very dry, smelled odd and after 2 bites we left. This order took 25 minutes to come out too. Might avoid this place from now on.

Not a bad new spot, plenty of seating. We came in for dessert — variety is pretty average mainly waffles or toast were the options. We ordered the mango toast which was not bad. Good sized for the $ 14 we paid. The popular drink was the fairy floss over a smoothie. Essentially just that — fairy floss over a smoothie. Smoothie was good. It seems the burgers and fries and breakfast fried chicken with peanut butter is the next thing we will have to order!

We were hungry for dessert on Sunday afternoon and Gourmet Conviction suggested that we try the new café called Shark Bites Toast in Victoria Park. It was a ‘cash-only’ café and ATMs can be located right across the road from the café towards the shopping centre. Shark Bites Toast originated from the southern part of Taiwan with a spirit that food can be shared between many people from different backgrounds and that food is a common language among all people. One word that came to mind to describe the interior of Shark Bites Toast was quirky! One part of the café has normal seating while the other part was like a cute animal kingdom with the decoration of colourful animals that customers and kids can sit on(under the watchful eyes of their parents of course). I tried to find some sharks but I didn’t see any except the cute shark on their serviette’s logo. They offered a seasonal menu of mango-anything such as French toast with mango, waffle with mango and mango smoothie with ice cream. Hubby was a recent converter to the freshness and juicy mango so he decided to order the Mango Smoothie. Our friends ordered two of the mango waffle with ice cream and I got myself a cotton candy lemonade drink. The fairy floss /cotton candy drink was quite new to the Perth’s food scene and the first time I saw it was at OEC Bob café in Northbridge. It was pretty fun to see some sugar drip from the cotton candy as the cotton absorbs some of the liquid from the drink. It wasn’t fun when I had to hold it so Gourmet Conviction could take a pretty photo because it became sticky really quickly(hahaha). I tried the cotton candy but it was too sweet for me so I just pushed the cotton candy out of the way and mixed my lemonade with vanilla ice cream. The drink was really refreshing and it will be something that I can order again in the future. The other two options for cotton candy drinks are strawberry and coffee latte. We love to share our food because it was quite economical and that way we didn’t get sick of one type of food. One of our friends quickly asked the staff for small plates and more cutleries so the mango waffle can be shared together. The waffle was really refreshing and perfect to be eaten together with mango, especially since this was the perfect season for ripen mango! I will be back to try the savoury range from Shark Bites Toast but so far all of us want a repeat of the good experience.
