With 150 years of continuous baking under their belt, Balfours makes Poppin’ Fresh look freaking 2D. It’s a little sad to see the physical presence of this SA institution relegated to the food courts. Oh well. You can’t help but be curious about Balfours’ most distinctive offering, the Frog Cake. It’s not something you’d order very often, or ever. Especially if you don’t want to attract attention(and comments) from people sitting around you. Order one. Make friends. *Spoiler Alert* If you haven’t had a Frog Cake, prepare to have your mouth assaulted with a mood altering quantity of glucose. The sweetness factor is 150% of what would be considered reasonable, leaving your taste buds in shock. It makes you feel alive. I want to brush my teeth as I write this. The old-fashionedness of café is cool. The person who takes your order walks over, leans their head in the kitchen window and verbally transcribes it to the cook. The«Bucket of Chips!»($ 2.50) came out crinkle cut, lightly seasoned and delicate tasting; like they’d been cooked in lighter oil. Extremely addictive. They gots the sweets and the savories covered: shakes, pies, tarts… Me likey on Facebook.
