Danger — stay away! I saw Lucy, who cut a huge chunk out of my hair on one side of the very front; she claimed to be a curly hair specialist but cut it dry and just finger combed it straight — not surprising that it was a mess. I now basically have two haircuts. She didn’t take any responsibility, just gave a variety of inconsistent excuses. For instance, she claimed there is no way to cut curly hair so that it looks good both straight and curly — that was the very first thing I said that I wanted done. I would never have let her cut my hair if she had said that upfront. She refused to even apologize for the mess she created. Then Frida, the owner, verbally abused me when I complained — she called me «appalling» and«disgusting» for complaining — it was a really horrible experience. It was also expensive: $ 120, in North Fitzroy, generally a reasonably cheap part of town. Bad hairdressers and worse management.

All hail this great little salon just off St Georges Road where you are certain to leave with very stylish locks. Here you’ll receive one of those salon experiences that make you feel like you’ve given yourself a very special treat, which you will have if you pay them a visit. The salon is small and understated in its design elements, which makes for a soothing and unpretentious hour(or more) of beautification. The stylists take their time over washing your hair and certainly show care in giving you a moan-worthy head massage, thereby imbibing that feeling of a luxurious treat. And once the cutter starts doing their thing, you really begin to understand just how much they really know their stuff. It costs for this level of expertise, and my last cut, wash and blow-dry set me back $ 100. Still, it’s worth the money for the blissful in-salon experience and the pleasure of having a hairdo that does what it’s told, for a few weeks at least.
