I really wish I could afford things from this store. I passed it the other day and saw a backpack at the front that was so beautiful that I actually gasped. I quickly rushed in and asked how much it was. When I heard that it was over $ 300 I had to bid the bag farewell. This store has some of the most beautiful clothes that I’ve seen and their labels come from London, New York and Melbourne to name a few. There is quirky jewellery, interesting sculptures, and French school. Yes: French school. They offer courses from the beginner to the advanced. A beginner course lasts for 5 weeks and costs $ 145(this includes the text book). The sales assistants are very friendly and love a good chat. Take your time to check out this clothing store that meets language school and art gallery. You won’t be disappointed.

In a word: colourful. I might have noted Dagmar Rousset down in my Moleskin as purveyors of ‘French stuff. Oh, and Opening Ceremony’ but what is immediately obvious about this little French fancy on Gertrude Street is just how colourful it is. From its neontastically expressionistic frontage to its technicolour clothing, Dagmar Rousset is one colourful little boutique. Ok, its clothes aren’t really my style — being arguably a little on the cutesy overgrown child spectrum design wise — but in stocking a range of hard to find designers such as Eley Kishimoto, Hopeless Lingerie and the suggestively named Take Off Your Clothes, what Dagmar Rousset does it does très well. These fullas also ostensibly offer some pretty good French courses meaning that even if your style is more Emily the Strange than Rainbow Bright this charming little shop is likely to have something other than an awesome window display to take your fancy. Viva France!

Dagmar Rousset has brought a bit of colour to Gertrude Street. I’m talking serious colour… if you look at the storefront, it utilises neon pink, red, orange, blue, green to create a tapestry of colour. As one of my Media Communications professor once stated: Melbourne is so black, we need a colour revolution! Why are people so afraid of colour? That is what Dagmar Rousset is bringing to Melbourne: a colour revolution. Inside, you’ll find sweaters, pants, jackets, shoes, etc. that utilise colours and patterns from designers from London, Auckland, Melbourne, and New York. However, clothes here does not come cheap, one item of clothing can cost anywhere from $ 200 to $ 500. The cool thing about this shop is that it is also a French school — this is what initially attracted me to the place(not the colour). Julia Pound, the owner of Dagmar Rousset, has taught at Alliance Francaise and Monash University and is bringing all things French to Gertrude Street. A 5-week course for Level 1 – 4 is $ 145 or $ 160 for an intermediate/advance conversational course. Although I can’t afford the clothes, Dagmar Rousset is definitely a great option when I want to get back into French.
