I am a big fan of Peking duck and Old Kingdom is my favourite for this meal. Duck skin is lovely and crisp with the staff carving nice big slices at the table… Not of this wafer thin shenanigans. You came for duck, you are going to get it! Second course can be duck with bean sprouts or noodles… Noodles is more filling of course but I tend to go for the bean sprouts. Soup is always a nice note to finish on. Don’t forget to check out the menu they have some nice options there as well. I love their pork ribs. This isn’t a 3 hat Michelin restaurant. It’s down and tasty duck and it’s been like this as long as I’ve known when I first discovered Old Kingdom back in 2000. Highly recommended and I always enjoy bringing my friends here.

A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse. In this case, my kingdom for a duck. Enter Old Kingdom, a dingy Chinese restaurant on Smith Street that specialises in roasted Peking Duck. Have a threeway with duck pancakes, duck and bean sprouts stir-fry, and last but not least, duck soup. Honestly, there were many things they could have done better. But for $ 55 a duck, there isn’t much to complain about. I would be back in a heartbeat if I ever had a Peking Duck craving. BYO, Bookings Essential

Fantastic duck pancakes! Pancakes were light. Duck was crispy. The second dish consisting of the bean sprouts and duck was a little oily. The third and last dish was soup, with a bit of duck and tofu — nice with a bit of spice. Fried ice-cream was a little burnt and not so good but the amazing duck pancake is worth coming back for! All in all, good value for money! Best to book ahead because the place gets pretty full on a Saturday night.

So many recommendations to try this place and I must admit I am sill not sure if it is worthy of all the hype. Yes they do duck, but do they do duck well? Honestly, I cant be the judge I am not a duck expert and I don’t fancy duck all that much. However, I do like duck pancake’s so I’ll give them that. When served as one course its tolerable, but 3? Really? Wow, duck overload… So its one star out of a possible three. I would have given them another star for the cleanliness and then another for the service which would make a whopping 5 stars but unfortunately they were not that clean and the service was below average. I do like the fact that they cater for large groups and they are BYO so I will give them a star for that. All-in-all 3 stars.

It’s certainly not the best or most authentic peking duck in Melbourne, but I love their serving concept. You order a whole roast duck and the rulers of the Old Kingdom carve it up and serve it to you over three courses — in pancakes with hoi sin sauce, cucumber and spring onions, a stir-fry, and a duck soup. Extremely filling and pretty tasty. One duck between two people, or two ducks between three people is a reasonable sized order. The interior is kind of gross — dark, tackily varnished wood, tables squeezed together, so it’s not the place for a nice do. However, it is just the place for a big, slap up feed. And what a huge bonus that there is a bottle shop right next door to pick up a bottle of whatever you like to go with your winged feast.

Old Kingdom is an old-worldy Chinese eatery that offers the most delicious Peking duck three course fixed menu. If you plan on eating the duck(which I highly recommend), be sure to call and book at least a day or two in advance, as the Peking duck must be pre-ordered. I’d suggest three people per duck, which comes to around $ 22 per person from memory. The three courses of duck(duck pancakes, duck stir-fry and duck soup) are really filling, so be warned that you will roll out of the restaurant fat and happy. The fixed menu is all served up onto a big lazy-susan in the middle of the table, and the shared eating experience makes it a really fun place to eat with large groups of friends, for birthdays or celebrations. Be sure to slip into the bottle shop next door to pick up some pinot noir(which goes perfectly with the flavours of the duck) on the way in!

There are some great Asian food strongholds in Melbourne. You have Chinatown in the CBD, there’s even Victoria Street in Richmond. Well, this place absolutely takes the(chinese pan) cake! They have the best Peking Duck deal in the city! It’s a fixed menu, banquet style feast extravaganza. You get three courses; duck pancakes, duck stir fry, then the main duck course with some broth. Seriously good, and filling. Icing on the cake? It’s a BYO restaurant, next to a stellar bottle shop. Go 10 minutes early, grab your wine and beer, and stuff your face on duck. Just wear your pants with the elastic waistband for ultimate comfort. AND call ahead to make sure you get the times right. They only do two seatings on the weekend for the duck feast. Not to be missed!
