Panelpop is one of those strange little idiosyncratic ideas that somehow turned into a business. The first question upon entering was, of course, what is a Panelpop? As it turns out, it’s a kind of frame/art canvas made from recycled materials, primarily reclaimed wood, polystyrene and stone. Panelpop sells plain panelpops for artistic/framing purposes, will mount your photographs and artwork onto a panelpop for between $ 70 and $ 150, and host workshops on making panelpops. The space is also semi-used as a gallery for local artists whose work is mounted on panelpops, so it’s a good place to scout for your art collection. The theme at the moment seems largely to be based around fables and fairy tales. The panelpops are visually pleasing and a great idea that will appeal to eco-conscientious art lovers. A good space to drop into from time to time.

PanelPop is such an interesting little shop. Their primary business is creating these reclaimed art frames + art surface all-in-one thingy. It’s old wood, reclaimed and repurposed into their ingenious little art display boxes, but this store goes a bit further. PanelPop also is like an art gallery in a sense. A few artists who use these little framed ‘canvases’ to great their works in a way exhibit and in a way sell through the shop. You can pop in an have a look at the different works, or even just peek in the window. If you’re a budding artist, try out their blank pieces and you’ve got a ready-to-make gift idea(or keep it for yourself, or course) or if you’re looking for a beautiful, unique hand-made gift, this takes the cake. Some of my favorites are by «Ghostpatrol»…check it out online or at the shop.

Panel Pop has to be the coolest way to make a home, a shop or just a space more decorative. Eco-Friendly, using mainly materials rescued from landfill, Panel Pop provides a glassless, and paperless way to display art; and i have to say, it’s pretty darn cool! You can get them to upload your art and photos onto their ‘Panel-Pop’ style for around $ 70(Being the smallest 6×6) and $ 150(The largest at 12×17). The way the images and art come up are very different and attract so much attention. I had some artwork send through to them and done up, looks great on the lounge room wall and every one is quite intrigued by it.

I stopped off here just to see what was happening, say hello to Tony Knolls and to leave some flyers for a street art event. Panel Pop is always changing its configuration; it is a former bank building that has been used as an art gallery and is now mostly a workshop devoted to producing the Panel Pops. The Panel Pop are environmentally sustainable supports for all kinds of art. I have seen these panels in many commercial galleries and serious artists use them for painting on, photographic prints, they are a great durable support for art. The panels are lightweight and that makes them environmentally friendly to transport as well. There is still a bit of an art gallery at Panel Pop, showing a variety of artists(including some of Melbourne’s great street artists) of what can be done with Panel Pops as a support for art. Tony Knolls is a great guy, very supportive and considerate of all dimensions of the arts world. This is why he invented and is now producing the Panel Pops. I’ve known him since he was running a gilt frame mirror and rental gallery space on Smith St.

Is it an art gallery? A frame shop? Or an eco-store? How about all of the above! In short, PanelPop is an eco-warrior framer, store and gallery rolled into one. It offers artists and photography buffs(even amateur ones like myself) a simple yet revolutionary solution to conventional framing by eliminating the need for paper and glass by printing directly onto the smooth stone surface. PanelPop prints digital photographs, scans and art directly onto the stone using a UV cured printer And the result: Photos have an ingenious depth of field minus the horrible reflection(otherwise caused by the glass). Panel pop also offers pre-framed art surfaces that work as a versatile canvas for use with pencil, pastels and paint or a combination of all. But the best part is all PanelPops are created using 94 percent waste(timber saved from landfill) so you too can be eco-friendly for art’s sake!
