It took a lot of perseverance to be here for a whole two hours on a Saturday night. This place is more inclined towards the younger crowd. Really young crowd. Which is fine, we all need to have that one place to explore our bad fashion taste, terrible drink selection and bad photo opportunities. In all honesty the music wasn’t great, the venue is a bit dirty and dark and the most fun we had was watching the security guards kick out drunk teenage boys.

When we asked some locals for a recommendation of somewhere ‘fun’ to go to dance they mentioned the Perse with the warning ‘it’s pretty sleazy’. My god, we aged instantly on entry. This seems the place to be if you’ve just cracked 18 or you’ve managed to score a fake ID but at the ripe old age of 26 we were definitely out of place. Pre-mixed drinks are still order topped with grenadine and the ‘DJ’ will pump out all the latest ‘hits’. We lost it when we got a 30 second snippet of Ace Of Base — All That She Wants. We belted out the words while the younguns weren’t quite sure what was going on. In addition to feeling 80 years old we realised that parents really need to teach their sons about respecting women. Females should be able to go out for a night without having guys try to chat them up or touch them or grind up on them on the dance floor. It was all pretty appalling to watch(the possible future mother in me is terrified). Congrats to the Perse for living up to that ‘sleazy’ status!

Friday nights here are a guilty pleasure of mine… I am no longer at uni but cheesy(awesome) 90’s pop still works, it just does.

With so many bars and pubs in Fitzroy, the Perseverance provides something most don’t, and that’s a pretty regular pub feel. With pools tables, standard beers on tap, and a traditional wood décor, «The Perse» is one of the most straight up pubs on Brunswick Street. It’s also not one of my favourite, as with so many on offer, I prefer to hit one of the music venues instead. This place can get quite busy on weekends, and the crowd tips toward the type keen on watching the footy whilst drinking, and although they do have live music in the next room, I still tend to head elsewhere.

If you are a young person, you will have to persevere through the shit 90’s music they play here and if you are old you will have to persevere with the young people who have come for the cheap booze. Do I sound like a persevering person here? No? Well that is because I have persevered with Perseverance one too many times. It is definitely worth heading to this venue for a few cheap drinks. But you will have to persevere with the shitness that is Perseverance. That is all I am saying.

The locals call it ‘The Perse’ or as i like to call it ‘Percy’s’ is a good low budget venue with cheap drinks and pretty terrible(but unbeatable) uni nights. When i first moved to Melbourne, my housemate would take me here, the crowd are all quite young and rowdy which can sometimes play at a disadvantage. Thursdays are the true rowdy night for us uni students, if you’re there between 9 — 10 you can play spin-to-win, so you can spin and if you win, get your drink for free! Friday’s are pretty unbearable, the 90’s night(I cannot stand 90’s music!) but you get $ 5 basic spirits between 8pm — 10pm. Usually i have to get pretty trashed to stay at Percy’s but after taking advantage of the free or cheap drinks, i usually head off somewhere a bit more happening.

This place is not my scene at all. Bad music, some pretty gross specimens in terms of clientele and a supremely obnoxious barman. They do have a pool table, which is a plus, and there’s a lesbian acoustic night, which may or may not be your cup of tea, but otherwise, I’d say give this place a miss.

The Perseverance, also lovingly referred to as «The Perse» has been a favourite amongst the uni kids for years. Hell, I even dropped in most Friday nights during«my youth»… Oh, those were the days. But I digress… The Perse is most famously known for their outrageous Friday nights — 90’s Night. That’s right, only 90’s music is played all night long. Think Hanson, Spice Girls, Aqua and all the rest. I often found myself singing along to the lyrics and thinking; «How do I know this so well!?» I could have been smart but instead I know the lyrics to Ace Of Base — All that she wants. On Thursdays they have(yet another) uni night, which is perfect for those on a budget. Sunday’s you can chill out, watch the footy and sink in to a parma. It’s perfectly located on the city-side of Brunswick Street so you can easily stumble there from your previous location. The drinks are cheap and the crowd gets sweaty, but I can only recommend this for the young kids! Sorry you other guys, but you’ll just embarrass yourself…
