I love Vietnamese food in Brisbane but the one little sucker that’s always hard to get a hold of is the amazing banh mi sandwich which is a staple of any food obsessive sandwich list. These guys do a great one. I’d really love it if they’d add a hit of maggi sauce, and some sharper pickled veg. I’d also love it if they’d add the pâté that is so common in Vietnam. But these are quibbles with what are a: cheap, b: great value and c: very tasty sandwiches. They’ll add a really cracking chilli paste if you ask them. They also do great noodle salads for under $ 8. The meatball and spring roll is a personal favourite. I probably wouldn’t rate them as a replacement for Mrs Luu’s over in Miltion which is doing really great things with Vietnamese ‘street’ lunches of all persuasions. That said, Central Brunswick Bakery punches well above the weight of the standard small family bakery and is terrific value. I’m assured their cold ricepaper rolls are also lovely and they stock standard bakery fare as well.

It wasn’t too long ago, there was a Brumby’s bakery here. Now, it has been replaced by Brunswick Central Bakery. I used to make it a ritual to come to Brumby’s every second Saturday to pick up some custard scrolls and a Breaka iced coffee and head down to Kangaroo Point and sit on the grass and watch the world go by. So you can understand my shock to see another bakery in its place. At first, I approached this bakery with skepticism. I was unsure whether they would fulfil the role of it’s predecesor. I bought a few sweet bread rolls and a chunky steak pie. Hooray! Food was great. So good, I forgot about Brumby’s. The lady at the counter was really nice. She was patient with us as we took our time selecting our choices. We even had a brief chat about the weather, location of their bakery and how to make bread. Very friendly service here. Looks like this place is now my new Brumby’s. I’ve continued the tradition and now come here every second Saturday.
