A really great place for a quick and easy lunch! I go to Tara Thai all the time when I am working in the Valley. The lunch specials are all great value for money — they are only $ 10 but are a good size. The special menu has a bunch of different stir frys, noodles, curries and soups and you simply pick whether you want chicken, prawns, vegies etc with it. The staff are super friendly and they never make you feel rushed. Overall, well worth it.

First impressions of Tara Thai aren’t that impressive. The décor from the street seems a little spartan. The welcome was warm though and I sat down and thumbed through the menu which was short but had all the Thai favourites you would expect. The service was shocking though — the reviews here are all of take aways, but the service for seated customers was slow and inattentive.

Well I would totally recommend a visit to Tara Thai. I was over a friend’s house and in desperate need of a good feed fast and decided it was obviously a thai night. After flicking through a few menus I was told that out of the numerous Thai places around the valley, Tara was where the party is at. I ended up with a traditional Thai favourite, Green Curry(vegetarian) while my friend went for the Red Curry(duck) and was further delighted to be able to choose from either coconut or plain steamed rice. Tara Thai is definitely cheap, but is not the cheapest, and when I was presented with my DELICIOUS curry in maybe just less then 15 minutes I would be happy to pay the extra couple of dollars every time. Like I said before, this was a take-out mission so I can only comment on the ambiance of the place for all of the 1.28 minutes I was in there. I was quite surprised at the sleek style and layout of the place, maybe there has been a newish refurb of the place idk?! but i definitely liked what I saw and would be more then happy to eat in the next time I visit(and there will be a next time)!

Like most students I have a weakness for cheap and dubious looking foods. In the case of Tara Thai it took a couple of minutes of internal debate (where I deliberated if the low low price wins over the appearance.) to get me over the threshold. And while not overly remarkable, the dinner was tasty, cheap and made for a very relaxed evening. Tara offers a range of stir-fried meats, traditional thai curries and rice/noodle dishes. While I haven’t tried all of them, I did enjoy my unassuming PADKRAPAO(Meat tidbit of your choice, stir fried with beans and capsicum in a yummy chilli and garlic mixture.) and some of my friends steamed dimsims and crunchy fish cakes. I think the best bit about this restaurant is the upstairs. Make sure to try out the traditional thai cushions and soak up the casual and friendly ambience. (And while it is BYO, be sure to not get TOO comfortable with the red wine and thai cushion combo or you will end up like the snoring gentleman who was seated in the neighbouring table.) With good lunch deals and value for money, Tara Thai is worth a gander when Valleyside.

Tara Thai is one of those restaurants that fall off the radar quite often. I go long stretches of time without visiting, and then when I do go, I remember why I enjoy it. The food is good, the staff are lovely, and the prices are low. For some reason I always end up going there at odd times or on Sunday nights when it’s very quiet and I can sit at a bench looking out onto Wickham Street and watch the world go by. On a busy night it’s also fun and tends not to get as busy as some of the restaurants in the China Town mall, which is a relief. You can BYO beer and wine to keep things cheap. The restaurant isn’t flashy, but the atmosphere is familiar and comfortable and the staff will do their best to make sure you enjoy your meal. The condiments on the tables are a bonus, and include chilli and crushed peanuts to enhance your meal the way you like it. A great little restaurant for a casual meal any night of the week.

So cheap! The lunch special is HUGE and less than $ 10. You choose your meat i.e. pork, beef, chicken, etc.(seafood extra) then your dish. There are so many to choose from including a delicious Pad Thai or Laksa Noodle Soup. My absolute favourite is Chilli and Basil with chicken. A combination of flavours — spicy and sweet. The chicken pieces are wok tossed with a mix of Asian vegetables, fresh basil leaves and chilli. This delicious stir-fry is served with steaming hot rice. Tara Thai is great for work lunches because it is in an ideal location and the meals are all so affordable. In addition to the $ 10 lunch deal they also have a $ 30 set menu options which is great for larger groups as you get a bunch of different mains, entrees and sides so everyone can share!
