As a Californian I am admittedly a bit stuck up when it comes to Mexican food(and I’m not a huge fan of Tex-Mex as I think it’s inauthentic) but this isn’t even a proper Tex-Mex joint in my opinion. The only reason I’ve been here twice is for birthday parties, not by my own choice. The margarita sounded harmless enough and they claim it was made with real lime juice but it did still taste and look like it was made with lime cordial. I’m not a fan of the overly sweet cocktails which they specialise in(one drink in particular my friends ordered was called Death By Chocolate…) I had the fajitas before which are dry and unappetizing, and while the al pastor pork tacos weren’t horrible, the meat was also overly cooked and extremely dry and they were served with a side of obviously canned pineapples, not fresh. The nachos were literally the worst thing I’ve ever paid for, I was shocked to find that they were topped with what seemed like pasta sauce that made the tortilla chips turn into mush. This dish was so terrible that I immediately deemed it inedible and really just not worth the calories. At least their pico de gallo is properly spicy and they served the tacos with corn tortillas rather than flour.

We came here for a cheap Monday night dinner, and I was not disappointed! $ 6 tacos and ½ price nachos!!! Between 2 of us we ordered chilli con queso(Mexican cheese dip and corn chips) which was probably the most expensive item on the night, $ 15 … but worth it, I love this dip! We then shared a beef nachos and had a chilli con carn soft shell taco each,(which was scrumptios) and I walked out of there feeling rather full. The lemon margaritas were delicious as well. Now we had all the specials … so I don’t know there usual size, but for less than $ 30 a head including a cocktail, I was rather impressed! Overall a very pleasant meal!

I don’t know what some of these other reviews are on about — for me, Zapatas is consistently great. Staff are particularly thorough in making sure you order exactly what you want. Food can be as spicy or mild as you want. Good range of cocktails and mocktails on carafes. Nachos were lovely, but if you’re hungry order the large size. Food straddles the line between authentic Mexican and Tex Mex, which suits me fine. Best Mexican in Freo, I reckon.

I went to Zapatas with my uni friends last night. It was an okay experience, we went on a Tuesday night so it was half price nachos and $ 6 tacos which was a bargain! I got the Carne Nachos with extra spicy sauce… needless to say the nachos were in very small portions and it didn’t have much of a flavour nor spice. I wasn’t that unhappy as I only had to pay $ 7 for them but I would not be impressed if I had to pay the full price of $ 14– it would definitely not be worth it!

I should perhaps start with the disclaimer that I am from the US and lived in California much of my life, so my standards for Mexican food may be a bit different than those of most Aussies. However, I really thought the meal was quite bad here and would not return. My burrito was just quite greasy and not terribly flavorful. My friend’s meal was no better. The atmosphere is kind of fun, the service was fine, and it’s nice that it’s tucked away from the main street, but I won’t be going back.

Zapatas is a great place to go with a group of friends. It’s loud, well themed and really does provide a great atmosphere. I’ve been a few times, and find that the service can be hit and miss — from super friendly, joking and accommodating to average, with the staff seeming disinterested. The menu is exactly what you would expect to find — fajitas, nachos, burritos etc and while the food is good, I can’t help but feel it’s quite overpriced for the quality of food you receive. A good, safe Mexican night out!

Been here twice and really like the authentic food. Great selection of classic mexican food in a very well presented mexican themed restaurant. Their slection of tequilla needs a little bit of work though. There was only three types on the menu with a nice little addition that was different. AGWA made from bolivian coco leaves. It’s green in colour and tastes amazing. Not hard like tequilla at all. The food was mild to hot just to my liking. Definately a place to visit at least once or more.

Great nachos on half price Monday’s and Tuesday’s! U can get a medium nachos and soft drink for $ 10! U have to get there before 6.30pm to avoid waiting for a table as u can’t book on mon or tues.

It just happens that I came here on a Tuesday night after being rejected from another Mexican restaurant across the road. For these reasons I may come across as a little bit subjective for the obvious just being rejected fact and for the fact that Tuesdays are half-price nachos and $ 6 tacos. SAweeeeet! I ordered the Supreme Nachos with spinach(I never received the spinach but to be honest I just remembered now that I ordered it and it was only $ 7). I also got a very generous Mai Tai, no holding back on the alcohol with their cocktails. The service was fantastic and friendly. They brought all of our food at the same time and(despite the embaressment) brought a cake up with plates and cuttlery(did I mention that it was my birthday?), joined in singing and put a sombrero on my head. The food isn’t fantastic but its a good cheap night out and they won’t rush you out of your seats.

If I were on death row, I’d have to request a Mexican feast and sangria as my last meal. After university finished for the semester, pure brain exhaustion led me to believe that the end was well and truly nigh. Naturally, food was in my mind. Zappatas has $ 10 meals and half price drinks on a Monday, so it wasn’t too hard to find a posse to who were down for some cheap eats and happy hour. One of my pet peeves is when you go to a restaurant and the wait staff have to use palm pilots. So! Frustrating! I think it took our waiter about 15 minutes to take everyone’s order. I know technology is supposed to improve our lives but I really feel I could have been face-planting my nachos much sooner if he’d used a pen and paper. The food servings were of a decent size(we did only pay $ 10 after all), and my taste buds would probably rate the food a 7 out of 10. I’d definitely go back there because it’s the cheapest Mexican around. I wouldn’t go after 7 though, the place gets so busy your stomach will probably be eating itself by 8. Get there early to avoid starvation and frazzled waiters. Oh, and make sure you inform them at the start if you’ll be paying separately!
