Embarrassing for SA tourism, bad eighties bar food prepared by a road house cook. Bad oysters. Given the location you could move on from wedges with sour cream and oysters Kilpatric! Seriously!(Belated review let’s hope they have improved of late)

Had a burger, chips and beer meal which was perfectly satisfactory. They have different burger options and I had the Italian which was with prosciutto ham and mozzarella. While it’s not the greatest burger in the world — standard pub grub — you can’t beat the location or the view at Glenelg. It’s fantastic. On a 27 degrees Celsius day it was perfect. I gather from other reviews it’s nicer in the day time than it is in the evening. It’s a lovely looking RSL type venue but I wouldn’t want to be there if it got too wild. *3.5 stars — bumped up to four.

I went there today with a friend for lunch, there was a musician playing on the stage, which I’m all about but the fact we had to yell to talk to each other was a joke. The guy who served me at the bar was extremely slow, kept calling me darling, which was fine but started to get sleazy and then forgot my drinks, until I had to then remind him to get. I got the Mexican chicken burger which was basically all salad except for a slither of chicken breast. If I wanted a salad roll that I didn’t have to pay $ 18 for I would have gone elsewhere. I knew I should have stuck with a parmy. There weren’t many tables out for people to sit at, which I found surprising as it’s lunch time and there were people everywhere.

I agree that to have a proper good time here you have to have a couple of drinks in you, but I seem to have fun every time I come to the Grand Bar. I love the music and love being able to sing along. It can get a bit squishy on the dance floor with people walking through, but this happens everywhere. I also love that when I come here you are bound to see other people you know. If you are a local in the bay area or live further south the Grand Bar is ideal if you don’t want to head all the way to the city. My friends and I love it here, I’d definitely choose the Grand over any other place.

This is a very nice bar if you visit it during the day or early evening. It is ideally located on the foreshore with uniterrupted ocean views. If you sit in front of the open(floor to ceiling) windows you can feel and smell the salty sea air as you have a nice bevvy. It’s a really lovely beachfront bar. Once night falls though I don’t rate it quite as highly. It may be going a bit far to call it feral but it does seem to be very ‘messy’. I’m used to party people but I always feel the patrons are absolutely ‘shit-faced’ here. In fact now I think of it I reckon I tend to drink more than usual on the rare occasion I’m here(usually enforced by a hens night). Maybe it’s as a coping mechanism to block out the anarchy of the crowd and atmosphere? Anyway if your two fave things are Top 40 hits and drunks go and be happy. In a nutshell-daylight delight!

I’m in agreement with the others on this place. It’s absolutely wonderful to just sit and relax on a sunny day, but once the way-too-much-hair-product-and-waxing dudes and those girls who always seem to be taking photos of themselves with their iphones(invariably with that duck-face pose they for some reason find alluring), then it’s time to pack up and find another nice place to relax. My last experience of a proper night out here was a good decade ago, and I recall it being just as messy as it appears now, the only difference being that the terrible music they played back then wasn’t as terrible as the music being played now. But for all these faults, yeah, warm afternoons with a beer or two and a few mates make this place pretty good.

The Grand Bar is very peaceful during the day, I actually quite like it. Picture a warm afternoon at the beach, nursing a beer on one of the tables by the big open widows, warm breeze playing with your hair… And then there’s Sunday nights, where all the gold chains and bitties come out the play with each other and themselves. I think they call it dancing, but more it just looks like some kind of large ethnic orgy. do not subject yourself to a Sunday unless a night off sleaze is what you’re after, also understand if you are a female and over 21, you are probably going to feel old. however if this is your kind of scene(latest music, dance floor and flirting) then I recommend you get in early because the line up gets pretty long, I stood in it for an hour once, not fun when its freezing weather. If you’re sensible, then The Grand Bar is a day time thing for you, but if you like to get messy and gyrate with all the other organisms then this is your bar baby.
