Scene: it’s 11pm after a Unilocal Elite Event I’m ready to eat my own hand. My last meal was brunch, maybe, and that kind of empty interstitial simply isn’t acceptable. Like a tiny red-lit oasis, I spied Kara 1, the original and still the best of the(three?) Karas around town. They had that getting-ready-to-close vibe about them so I ducked in quick as an eel and ordered their Half & Half combo, which is a small ramen and a small other dish, in this case a spicy pork noodle. Got ‘em takeaway and they were greater than the sum of their parts, both laced with tiny radish spears and bursting with flavour. I was reals tired but my mouth didn’t know, there was a party all up in dat club that was still going when I fell asleep at the table a few minutes later.

I’ve come across Kura countless times on Unilocal searches for something cheap and nearby. It’s taken me about 2 months to finally set foot in that place. It was definitely worth the wait. The place is a tiny(and I mean tiny) closet. So if you have claustrophobia or hate sharing oxygen with people, just order take away. I took a seat at the counter around 715pm on a Friday evening. Within a matter of minutes the placed filled up and I had other patrons literally stacked all up in my personal space. Not cool, but I was hungry. The menu is extensize and somewhat overwhelming. It ranges from rice bowls to sushi, noodles to BBQ, vegan friendly to carnivores. Take your time and look at all the pictures. I ordered the Chef’s Special: Kura Bibim Don(Minced beef, veggies, egg w/rice) for $ 10.90. What a great choice! The portion size was comparable to Oidens large rice bowl, but you don’t get free miso soup at Oidens. The minced meat was surprisingly tasty. I say surprisingly because it looked kinda blah. The veggies were fresh and the egg was a perfect touch. Add a little(or a lot) of chili powder to your bowl for a nice little kick. I’m knocking off one star for(2) things: 1. Price — you basically can get the same bowl at Oidens for $ 3 less. It’s good, but it’s not $ 11 good. 2. Seating — I’m all for saving space and filling the counters and tables w/patrons, but when you have the chairs soooo closely spaced together. It’s hard to enjoy your meal.

My Japanese food craving is gone, and I am a very happy person. Kura is in the Chinatown district and is relatively easy to find as it is at the corner of 2 main streets. The restaurant is really interesting as it is actually split up into 2 sections. One downstairs area and another area that’s upstairs — they’re not connected, so don’t get confused! My friends and I were a large group of 7, so we weren’t sure if the bottom floor would accommodate us, so we went upstairs hopefully to get lucky. Unfortunately, the place was packed and we’d have to wait 40 minutes. We decided to just go downstairs and squeeze into 2 small tables. Now off to the food! I really enjoyed Kura as the menu seemed quite extensive. I ordered the Unagi meal, 2 pieces of salmon nigiri, and the salmon bowl. I love my unagi and salmon! All 3 were very delicious and taste so fresh! I am so happy I came to this place despite the lack of table space.

Been to Kura many times where the food is great and the prices are not too bad. They have a wonderful selection on the menu but the best thing on the menu for me and what I usually get if I come here is the Ox/Beef Tongue Curry and Taiyaki. I haven’t found many places that have Beef Tongue Curry in Sydney and also not many places have Taiyaki. I haven’t tried many things on the menu, just some donburi and mostly the curry but my friends have said that the other food at Kura is great. This particular branch is small, so if you come at peak hour you have to wait but it’s worth it. You can also go to 2 other branches and the more expensive branch on top of Kura if you can’t wait.

One of my favourite things about Sydney is the fact that it’s not hard to find an authentic Japanese restaurant. In Melbourne 9 out of 10 Japanese restaurants are run by Koreans or Chinese, so I am always excited to dine in with a real Japanese cook. The food here is cheap, tasty and the service is friendly. The menu is long and has many pictures. I could easily eat every meal here for a week and still be trying new things.

Yum yum yum! After Sakura turned a bit average, we’ve been looking for another Japanese lunch spot in the CBD. We’ve found it! Super fresh sashimi, delicious soups, tasty bento boxes and the quickest service I’ve ever encountered. Win!

I want to give them a 1 star so no one else goes here. There are only about 10 seats and I don’t want to be fighting off a crowd to get in! But the food is quick, fresh and delicious. I had a great udon($ 10.50), mini sashimi($ 5) and takoyaki($ 4.80)… admittedly I suffered SEVERE food envy when I saw the plates of sushi arriving at the next table. It’s on my list for next time!

Kura is a great little Japanese restaurant that serves good value meals in a small corner shop in China Town. Their stand-alone meals like teriyaki salmon and katsu don are delicious as is their different combination meal sets which usually come with rice, miso soup and salad. The people working here are friendly and its cool how you get to see all the action in the kitchen take place pretty much in front of you as the shop is that small that even the chefs say hi and bye to you as you enter and leave. I also like how they serve Ramune lemonade here, its a Japanese lemonade thats served in a really cool bottle. Unlike most screw top bottles, this one has a lid which you take off and re-position on the glass ball at the top and push down on, after which the seal is broken and the glass ball falls to the centre of the bottle. COOL!

Literal Hole In The Wall. Tiny, but great sushi. Weary and Omega 3 deprived, I stumbled in to this eeny-weeny place and was met by an enormous smile and ushered to a counter facing the back wall. There’s two tables, I think, and small counters facing this and the even smaller kitchen. I quite enjoyed the anonymity of eating to the wall, I didn’t have to disguise my less than graceful chopstick skills. I quickly opted for the Sushi combo, with a seaweed salad on the side, all for less than $ 15. Miso soup arrived instantaneously, and the salad and sushi pretty darn quick after that. The combo was arranged beautifully on a big, round lacquer tray and although not super fancy, was well above average sushi fare. The eel had just been cooked, the octopus I glared at malevolently before devouring. Kraken issues. What can I say? The seat next to me was taken by a woman who clutched this monstrously huge teddy bear thing covered in pink rhinestones that appeared to have a mobile phone growing out of its back like a telecommunicative tumour. Never let go. They don’t advertise a closing time, so be aware it that the above is an approximation. The vibe was fun, the service great, the sushi scrumptious, the customers interesting. All good.

This restaurant is located in a small corner shop opposite Sydney’s Paddy market. It feels more like a take away shop, not alot of seats available. This place is always busy and filled with customers. The bento set is reasonable and good.
