Gaganis Bros

This is actually one of my fav food shopping destinations in Adelaide. I get really excited about planning a visit to Gaganis Bros. Mainly because the shear size of the place and also the ability to buy quality items in bulk. This is where I buy slabs of canned tomatoes, massive bags of flour, herbs and cheese. Everything is so cheap here.
They stock most things you need for a household or for a commercial kitchen. You will find all sorts of kitchen tools, utencils, cutlery and crockery here as well. If you need bulk napkins or cleaning products, Gaganis is the go!
I have a coal BBQ at home and this is where I source Mallee Root coal. It burns really hot as it is quite a dense wood and burns for a long time. The good thing about using their coal is that it is not treated with any petrol or lighting chemicals. That way you are not getting all those crap chemicals in your food like from processed BBQ heat beads. Never use those heat beads for your BBQ!
If you ever want a lamb spit, you can source them here for sale at decent prices. You can buy all of your BBQ tools here including electric motors to spin your lamb spit.
Be prepared to spend a bit of time here when you visit. You will end up browsing for ages and trying to decide whether it is a good idea to buy a 1kg of dried basil. Every time I visit I spend a while here and I end up getting the munchies. Don’t worry, Gaganis looks after you and has a BBQ set up outside where they cook Ćevapčići served with a german style potato salad in pita bread. Now I know that sounds weird, but it is fricking awesome! I think they are only $ 3 each too. Just try it! Be sure to grab some napkins though, they are messy!

Gaganis is foodie heaven! As mentioned in previous reviews, this is a great place to come if you want quality foods in bulk … as well as a one-​stop-​shop for more unusual products (such as halva, which I’m now addicted to: P).
This is a warehouse, and no effort has been made to make it look ‘pretty’ — unlike it’s Italian counterpart Mercato, it’s not interested in aesthetics, everything is purely practical. My partner couldn’t care less about that (being the cook in our relationship), but I found it difficult to find things. Saying that, we bought a large bag full of goods and spent very little money. So it’s definitely worth coming here and stocking up!

Do you need 1kg of bay leaves? How about a 2L drum of olive oil? This warehouse is blessing and a curse on my house and that of my mother’s.
Don’t be fooled into thinking you are going to quickly walk in here, grab a packet of almonds and walk out. Because to find those almonds you have to walk up isles and isles of 10 types of sweet biscotti, smells of freshly packed paprika and spices, and blocks of cheese in all colours, shapes and sizes that are all at ridiculously cheap bulk buy, but reasonable quality prices.
My hot tips for shopping at this Herculean hide out in Hindmarsh are:
— Park in the free car park and get a trolley at the entrance (no seriously you will need it).
— Browse the home wares department if you are in need of any kind of cheap, good quality baking tray, crockery set, Greek idol or fresh tea towels for hanging over your shoulder while cooking.
— Despite the overwhelming size of the place it is laid out in a fairly smart order: nuts, dried fruits, cereals, biscuits — all at least $ 2 – 3 cheaper than at the supermarket per kilo; catering equipment, giant tins of olive oil, bulk packaged cans of soft drink and flour etc; and then the holy fridges of cheese, fetta, olives, homemade dips and frozen goods at the back (where all the action is happening.
— Check out the bags of coal and firewood they also sometimes have here (just so you can appropriately roast half a goat on your BBQ). The prices are dirt cheap.
— There are free boxes and bags you can use at the exit, so don’t worry about your own shopping bags this time.
— Grab a suspiciously looking sausage from the BBQ out the front. They smell damn good and you have probably just spent from morning until lunch time shopping here anyway!

Bulk is bigger and better!
Having frequented Gaganis for years it has become my monthly ritual shop to stock up on raw foods. Fortunately they extended the trading hours on Saturdays to 2.30pm awhile ago so that there is no longer a mad dash down Port Rd on Saturday mornings.
Excellent prices and and a great range of Mediterranean/​European food keep me coming back. I’m obviously a fan but not alone — nearly the entire Greek/​Italian population of Adelaide pass through this enormous warehouse regularly. If you are in the market for continental meats, cheese, coffee, bread, olive oil, nuts, seeds, herbs, condiments, baking items etc etc — this is the place to head. The more obscure can also be found … canned chipotles, dried cherries, a whole sauerkrauted cabbage and maraschino cherries with stems were all noted on a recent visit. (They have also extended their range of Indian foods.)
New to Gaganis is the Greek equivalent of Bunning’s sausage sizzle. Daily you can smell the enticing smell of grilled beef chevapchichi, warmed pita, onions and a continental salad wafting through the car park. Certainly more tempting and less fattening (maybe?) and definitely more entertaining (the Greek chef always has an anecdote) than the more conventional Aussie alternative!
Beware: Christmas and Easter are potentially fraught as the car park overflows and tempers fray!

Gaganis Bros. terrifies me. Entering the huge warehouse I’m always completely overwhelmed, and I have no idea where to start, what to buy, or what half of the things are.
But I love it.
As everyone says, it’s huge. There is just so much stuff. I drive here to get vanilla bean paste, its almost 10x cheaper than I can get it in the supermarket. But then I get tempted.
There are the tubs of yoghurt, the deli section, huge bags of flour and sugar that I’m sure I need.
If you’ve never been it’s worth checking out, and chances are you’ll find something to keep you coming back. It’s a great place to wander to see what you discover, and the smells from all of the spices make wandering pretty enjoyable by itself.

Ever needed 10 litres of olive oil? Gaganis Bros is the best bulk Italian and Mediterranean food warehouse around. Everything you could think of can be bought in a can or kilo bag, plus dozens of different meats, sausages, cheese, seafood, and staples like pasta, rice, and large quantities of sugar, flour and other cooking needs.
They have a separate area for cooking wares, with loads of cute and useful kitchen utensils and crockery sets.
I go here for my weekly baklava fix. They sell their baklava for $ 14.95 per kilo, so five pieces cost me only $ 3. And it is good. Not oozing honey like commercial baklava often does, and with a high nut to pastry ratio. There are five different types (hence I get one of each) including a walnut variety, which is again delicious, and I’m not even a big fan of walnuts.
They stock most spices under the sun, though it can be hard to find any in packs under 500 grams. Still, their prices are decent, and you can get good deals on kilos of nuts.
Though you’ll spot it when you drive along South Rd, you can’t actually get in that way. You need to go around the back and enter the carpark from Bacon St. From there, you’re set to roam the shelves wondering what you could do with 12 kilos of tuna/​cheese/​mystery products with labels written only in Greek.
You can also buy coffee beans and have them freshly ground for you there. Coffee, great sweets, and Italian food. You understand why I get so excited about trips to Gaganis.

Growing up Greek I remember outings to Gaganis as a kid where we would come back home equipped with feta, olives and ouzo lollies.
On the few times I have returned to Gaganis since my childhood I have been transported back to being a little wog kid and oddly enough, in this sense, I actually find the store quite nostalgic.
In terms of content Gaganis is a national distributer and wholesaler with a strong Mediterranean influence. And let me tell you, there is a reason why it has remained a favourite among ethnic grandmothers for years. That reason being, the wholesale price.
Although overall a positive experience I would suggest double-​checking particular items for quality or freshness. Like many places, sometimes there is not always a one hundred percent consistency with your finds.

Want food in bulk — they got it, this is the ultimate and closest thing to a Mediterranean market influence in the western suburbs of Adelaide. Many people from ethnic backgrounds have known what Gaganis offers and have been coming here for years, gradually the rest of the population has cottoned on and joined the pilgrimage.
Rice, flour, sugar, spices, oil, coffee, olives, meat, kitchen supplies, catering supplies, rotisseries and so much more, they even sell to supermarkets. As an example, the average Joe buys a 1kg bag of rice from the local supermarket for $ 4.50 but if you purchase a bag often it’s much more economical to get it in a 10kg bag from Gaganis for approximately $ 25, that’s a saving of about $ 20!!! And this is only one example of money saving options available as there are many others to choose from. You don’t have to buy everything in bulk as there are smaller packaged items and really there is something for everyone’s taste, size and budget.
It’s the sort of business traders from centuries ago would have bartered along the silk road or goods transported in galleons across the seas, bringing back exotic spices from lands far away. It’s definitely worth a trip to the South Road location with free off street parking on the premises around the back, entry off Bacon Street. No iPhone scanner apps here people, just great prices all the time.
