You know those scraggly old shopping trolley cat ladies, who collect other people’s random junk off the street? I think I have been reincarnated from one of them.
To me old stuff is by far superior than new stuff. The more de-​stressed and ugly retro a chair looks, the happier I get. If I can get a near new filing cabinet for half the price in olive green, then I know I’m having a good day. And so it goes that every time I enter Hindmarsh Disposals I enter my happy place.
Near new and near eras I wasn’t even born in are all represented here. There is a particularly large amount of crockery and glassware from the 70s and 80s for $ 1 – 4, chairs, side tables, bed headboards and cupboards from the 60s and 70s are well represented and so are filing cabinets. My hipster dream is to make a table out of an old door and for $ 60 – 90 you’d walk away with a glass pane, wooden door that needs little restoration. Actually, hardly anything here needs much restoration — this isn’t a junk yard after all.
Be prepared to rummage as everyone says, but also know that this isn’t a Freedom showroom for a reason. You’re not paying to have a manikin show how to touch a lamp here and that’s why it’s cheap.
And like the guy on the TV tells you to do, just haggle. You are bound to find a vintage Holden sign or old record through to a brightly coloured collection of aluminum tea and flour canisters for nix or for half the price of even IKEA furniture you can get something that was built in the day when things were made to last more than 6 months and didn’t require an Allen key to assemble.

Despite its messy appearance, this second hand furniture store has some really great bargains — if you are willing to climb over and through things to get to them. There is little semblance to order in the shop although I’m pretty sure I saw what looked like a mainly white good and bed area. There was a nice man who came and asked us what we were looking for and if we required any assistance but then proceeded to say all the couches were scattered everywhere and it was just best to cover the whole store.
Although we were looking for a couch I spotted some really great bargains on other items. There was a perfectly fine three shelved black bookcase for $ 25.00 and a huge corkboard you could hang on your wall for a measly $ 8.00. There is also a lot of crap that you wouldn’t buy but the man assured us they usually only take things they are sure are good quality enough to actually function and stay in one piece.
The store is on Port Rd, but the entrance is from Chief Street, so don’t freak out if it looks closed!

A couple of mates of mine furnished a good portion of their house with goodies they found here when they were at uni.
I think ‘crammed’ is a bit of an understatement, at least it was the last time I dropped in for a look. I do like to flip through some of the second hand books they’ve got, there’s usually something worth buying. And the rugs can be a good deal too.
If you’re on a budget like my friends were, then this is an awesome shop.

There is lots of stuff crammed in here, everytime I manage to pick up a bargain. Last time I brought an old wooden chest, which I thought was pretty cool, for $ 35 bucks! Bargain or what?
They have a bit of everything here for everyone, from cookware to home wares, and almost all are a really good bargain. I think secondhand furniture has so much more personality than a piece of new crap from fantastic furniture for the same price.
Seriously, come in for a look, and see if you can find a bargain for yourself.

I love junk. Useful and useless junk. Hindmarsh Disposals has got a bit of both — although more useful stuff than most second hand stores. The prices are reasonable — when I first moved to Adelaide with my parents we bought lots of secondhand stuff here.

If you’re a vintage furniture hunter, they have some bargains here, but you’ll have to be quick because there is a high turnover. I once found a very old fashioned book about how a lady should go about bagging a man, for fifty cents. Antique sexist propaganda!

What a sleeper!!! Doesn’t look like much from the road. Doesn’t even look like much when you first enter. But ohhhh boy – be still my beating heart – because beyond the first smallish room is a huge, sprawling shed of stuff. Furniture stacked two high and obstructing vision. One buck records. A wagon wheel. Antique briefcases. Sports equipment. TVs. Kitchenware. You name it. Break off from a main passageway and you’ll need to wonder awhile before connecting up again with another major aisle.
Higher than garage sales prices, but generally one of the cheaper secondhand stores around. Wonderful convenience and selection. And of course, it’s perfectly acceptable to put your haggle cap on.
$ 50 delivery (Metro Adelaide) per load available. Parking ’round back off Chief Street. There’s a bus stop directly in front and the Entertainment Centre tram stop is only a few hundred metres away.
For bargain hunters it’s nearly impossible to leave this store without at least one new treasure.
