MONA Ferry

We rode in the Posh Pit on our way to MONA. So glad we did. As soon as we got on board they gave us a glass of bubbles. We went straight outside and stood on the deck. It was lovely until the boat picked up speed (it was in May, so freezing!). After a while we went inside and enjoyed another drink with our canapés. There was a delicious little stuffed potato skin, a crisp dehydrated apple cracker with some goats cheese and walnut and a toast with some pesto, cheese and tomato. On the return trip we had a taste of petite desserts — also delicious. Highly recommend MONA and the Posh Pit!

The Posh Pit is so worth it — free flow wine and sparkling from Morilla Estate, plus snacks.
At the time of booking I was offered the chance to join a tasting experience at Morilla, which was a great way to finish the day.

On our second visit we travelled on MR-​0, the smallest of the Mona ferries. It was the opening night of Marina Abramović’s Private Archaeology so there was a crowd but the information desk let us know which gate to loiter around.
Consequently we were the first to board and secured the circle of white seats in the middle of the floor. We sat surrounded by gold-​coloured bars and drank Moorilla sparkling riesling and Moo Brew Belgo. It was a lovely cruise and again I wished it were longer.

After much deliberation, we took the Posh Pit to MONA and were quite happy that we did. The extra $ 30 cost per person gives you a flexible ticket in the first class section on the ferry including a small selection of canapés (4 per person, savory on the way to MONA and sweet on the way back to Hobart) plus unlimited beer, wine or soft drinks. There are other alcoholic drinks available, at charge. If you could manage 2 drinks in 30 minutes, it is worth the extra cost.
I called in advance to ask about dietary requirements and they were happy to comply.

Alright, if you’re planning on going to MONA, you MUST take the ferry.
We took advice from other Unilocal reviews and decided to go with the posh pit option. The canapes were probably just okayish, but we had 2 drinks either way, and you get to sit in the nicest area at the front of the boat.
Just a fun thing to splurge not much money on to feel a little bit fancy…

Yep, it’s true. This is the most glamorous way to travel to MONA – and the easiest way, if you’re visiting from out of town and staying in the city.
Not only is the MONA ROMA a convenient trip for the arty traveller, it’s also a really stunning way to see the river Derwent and some of the sights to and from the museum. Time your journey well and you’ll have a sunset ride home that’s nothing short of stunning.
Go ahead, splurge for the posh pit.
Book ahead if possible, as during peak periods you may miss out or be forced to wait around for a later pickup time, or worse yet – catch the MONA ROMA bus instead. How dull.
And don’t worry too much about printing off your tickets if you’re an iPhone user – they’re happy to accept screen-​displayed tickets too.

The food on the ferry is awesome! Glad I didn’t eat first, so that I could get the Moroccan lamb sausage roll, yum! The ferry has camo paint — reckon its part of a secret Tasmanian Defence plan. To take over Melbourne maybe? Thing is, we are on board :-) Awesome experience!

Since we were on a once in a lifetime adventure in Tasmania, we decided on taking the Posh Pit to MONA. AUD $ 50 includes ferry back and forth from the MONA, appetizers, desserts, & beverages (Morilla wine, Moo Brew, coffee, water, etc etc) as well as the ferry back and forth. Since the ferry is $ 20, you’re basically paying $ 30 for the food and wine and the «poshness» of riding in the Posh Pit. Totally thought it was worth it since we had two drinks both ways. Canapes were yum. Don’t like dessert so can’t comment on them except they were too sweet as are all desserts. Had the Morilla Pinot Noir. think it was the Praxis since that’s the $ 10/​glass one. Oh, no Moo Brew Dark but there was Moo Brew Pale Ale and the Moo Brew Pilsner. Had the Moo Brew Pale Ale which was yums. Ride to museum is about 30 minutes.

So we signed up for the VIP section of the ferry — called the Posh Pit — ok… I can feel those eyes of judgement… Yes it was a a bit of a wank (Mona’s words) but it was the wedding anniversary and I had to impress! I must admit I did feel guilty boarding the boat but it melted away with the first sip of a Moorilla estate pinot! I lapped it up baby! Only thing missing was someone fanning me with ostrich feathers! The Posh Pit includes beverages (hot and cold) and standard alcohol, also included is a share plate of canapés on the way over and petit fours on the way back. I was also thankful on the way back as the ferry was fully booked and there wasn’t too many spare seats in cattle class– but seats aplenty in the Posh Pit
So in the spirit of Mona my suggestion is — have fun– splurge a little ($ 50pp) and enjoy the experience!

Easy to find and conveniently timed for a day at the MONA, the MONA Roma ferry is a fun and fast catamaran service… with snacks!
Hint: watch for sea spray in the outside sections, that cow gets very wet on the way there and the sheep get drenched on the way back — good thing wool is naturally waterproof :)
We didn’t take the ‘Posh Pit’ VIP section and to be honest it didn’t look like it was worth it.

A great way to see Hobart from the sea while enjoying a historic explanation of the area.
We saw birds that from a distance looked like penguins, but were actually something else.
The price wasn’t too much for the amazing views and relaxing journey to and from the Mona.

The MONA ferry was made locally and started running March, 2013. The captain has many more interesting facts to share on the voyage to MONA!
You can get coffee and small snacks on board for your trip over; and beer, wine and a cheese plate to toast your MONA adventure on the return journey.
If you’re planning on visiting MONA, I recommend travelling on MONA Roma.

Look you can take local buses for a fraction of the ferry. Taking the MONA ferry is not about time — the land-​based options you have are also pretty quick. Taking this thing is about getting ready for MONA. You’re out on the water. If it’s a lovely day you can be out on the deck — but be cautioned — there’s a strong wind. There are some snacks on board if you are feeling peckish. But it’s a comfortable short 30-​minute ride to one of the coolest museums Down Under. If the economic part of you can only splurge a little just take it one way and take a bus or share a cab back.
