I must be getting old, because I have become a big fan of ABC and their shows in the last few years. For most Australia parents ABC is also a lifesaver. Their ABC4 Kids channel has continuous age appropriate tv shows, without ads for the latest and greatest toys. That doesn’t mean they don’t merchandise their own shows though. I visit this place for their kids section. They have all my son’s ABC programs on DVDs. Which is great if you just need 20 minutes to get something done, but your kid wants to watch their favourite episode of Octonaughts or Play School. They also have a great range of kids books and activities. The staff at Karrinyup are lovely and very patient with my son who is torn between his two favourite DVDS or books.

This ABC Shop serves a very distinct role at the Karrinyup Shopping Centre, providing the sort of books, DVDs and CDs that the nearby Dymocks does not. It is therefore the perfect stop if you’re looking for books by Australian authors. Dymocks doesn’t stock Elisabeth Wynhausen’s The Short Goodbye, for example, which I stood reading with an amused look on my face for a good ten minutes.(I used to work with Wynhausen at The Australian, her departure from which gives the book its opening chapter.) It doesn’t stock Geraldine Brooks’ 2011 Boyer Lectures on ‘The Idea of Home’ or Ken Inglis’s excellent two-volume history of the national broadcaster. This is where one comes to pick up such excellent tomes. It is also where one comes to pick up one’s favourite British television imports – Hercule Poirot, Downton Abbey – and one’s favourite home-grown shows, like Mother and Son. We found ourselves caught up in the Lonely Planet section and walked away with a book on Russia, but not until we had browsed everything else in the store to within an inch of its life.
