I spent $ 80 on alterations for a dress that I bought for $ 80. This just doesn’t seem right to me. The work they did was great. When I collected my item and I thought it still needed to be altered slightly more, they had no trouble taking the item back and altering it again to my specifications without charging any more. They’d be ok to use for a simple hem-lift or similar, but if you get anything more than that done it’s going to cost you quite a bit.

My brother is getting married next weekend and I wasn’t available for the suit fitting. I don’t know why, but the idea of going somewhere to get measured was not very appealing to me: something about thinking it was going to take forever and something about not wanting to know my measurements on the grounds that they might depress me. But I ducked into Looksmart and found that at least one of those concerns were ungrounded. I was in and out within ten minutes, measurements in hand and slightly relieved that they were not the most terrible numbers I had ever seen, and the whole thing only cost twenty dollars.(In retrospect, this actually seems like a lot, but at the time it seemed fair. The poor woman had to fuss about around my groin and no one deserves that.) The place also does clothing alterations, of course, as its name suggests, and I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment about going there and having them do mine.
