Came for a pre-​movie dinner with just an hour to spare and staff were really accommodating. We got the mixed thali plates which was 6 items (3 meat and 3 veg) with rice and bread. Unfortunately our masala tea took longer than dinner took to arrive and eat despite reminding the waitress a couple of times. Also ambiance is lacking a bit from what I remember when I last came here years ago. The food was really tasty though so we’ll be back again with more time to enjoy it next time.

New owners basically served us supermarket jar Indian. Horrible food, nothing like it was previously.

Terrible food. Rice is half cooked. Chicken has no taste. The vegetarian curry is like tomato sauce.
We are here with 45 Indians for a meeting and I suspect none of us would ever return here!
I did not have to pay for the food tonight and am thankful.

Variety’s the very spice of life, that gives it all its flavour
As far as my Adelaide Indian food knowledge goes, the Spice Kitchen is one of the most expensive restaurants around but if you love your Indian food or you have a special occasion such as ‘I just won the lottery’ this place is definitely an experience to get on board with. Just kidding about the lottery part, the meals are about $ 26-​$ 30 which I consider a bit on the pricey side, but hey, I didn’t have to claim bankruptcy on the way home from dinner. This is no hangover on a Sunday hit-​up (which I indulge in more often than I’d like to admit), this is something to be planned, fasted for and savoured!
The restaurant is located in a beautiful old building on Kensington Road therefore the place has an old-​school heritage feel. The décor is simple and classy with linen table cloths and dim lighting. As soon as you stroll through the doors of this ‘Indian Food Heaven’, the pungent aroma of Indian Spices hits you in the face like you’re Kevin Foley on the streets of Adelaide.
On the menu — curries and korma and masala, OH MY! Dorothy, I don’t think we are in Bland-​sis anymore. These dishes pack plenty of KAPOW! And why not give them all a try? I indulged in a meal, or should I say feast, called ‘The Spice Kitchen Thali’. Winner, winner chicken dinner, this was something to write home about! A tray comes out with a bunch of little pots of different curries so you get to try a whole variety. What an experience!
AND if you snagged the ‘Split the Bill’ voucher yesterday in the Advertiser (or willing to do some bin diving today) Spice Kitchen is a participating restaurant so you can get one of your meals half price. Get amoungst it my followers!

I’ve only ever tried the takeaway section of the restaurant and for dinner at that so read this review with that in mind.
The food has always met expectations but I do have friends that dislike the place with a passion for being ‘too bland’. Value is okay, food is okay (though the rogan josh is a winner) and service is… probably less than ok.
Most of the points awarded are for the convenience factor of the takeaway section. Walk in, choose what you want from the buffet style counter and you’re in and out in 5 minutes if there’s no crowd. Beaut!

There is a lot of hype about the spice kitchen but I don’t really buy into it.
The food is fairly decent, but from time to time it seems to be a bit lacking and dosen’t really scrub up compared to a number of other Indian places in town.
I agree that the lunch packs are pretty good value, although the take away curries seem to be a bit substandard compared to those in the restaurant.
I think it may, however, be the type of curry I enjoy moreso than the curries here being of lesser quality.

The Spice Kitchen has built quite a name for itself and is without a doubt one of the best Indian restaurants in the eastern suburbs. If you’re a big curry fan, then you’ll want to give this place a visit.
There’s not much I need to say about the food here — it speaks for itself. The lamb roganjosh is exquisite, and the beef vindaloo has a real kick — as Stuart has mentioned, over-​confidence will only lead to some very spicy tears. Though I’ve only ever ordered take-​away, the interior of the restaurant itself (not the take-​away service counter) is beautifully decorated, and is an intimate setting for a dine-​in experience.
The prices are reasonable, though the idea of paying $ 12 to $ 14 per curry that’s served from a warmer container doesn’t quite sit well with me. Admittedly I’m being a little picky here — curry takes hours, even days, to prepare. So expecting a curry to be made on the spot is an unreasonable request. Perhaps if the warmers weren’t in view, and I was instead ignorant to the preparation, my mind would be at ease.
If you haven’t already tried this place, I strongly recommend you start organising your next curry night — and make sure these guys are supplying!

Where to start with The Spice Kitchen??? This is traditional Indian food — and some of the dishes, like the Dopyaza, carry a real kick, so let’s start with a warning, don’t go in thinking «yeah, I’m a chilli expert, they can’t hurt me» :)
Ok,. this is one of my favourites for Indian in SA — for a start, they do wonderful lunch packs for under $ 10, with your choice of a couple of dishes and rice. The serving is huge value for the price, plenty of meat, good and filling. Friday lunch time there can be a bit of a line up as people do workplace lunches together.
As with most Indian food, service is prompt and efficient — we dined here a few times before learning about the Sunday lunch «all you can eat’ banquets once a month — if you like Indian food, this is an absolute no brainer, they just keep bringing food out.
The Spice Kitchen has been around for a long, long time — used to be just down the road in a much smaller shop. If you enjoy the flavours, they also make kits that you can use to make the same dishes at home, with all the spices and ingredients you need — just add meat and some love, it’s not like a cook in sauce, you still need to prepare the spices appropriately.
