My excursion to Liquorland Mackay was my first experience in Australia buying alcohol. A bit of background: I had no prior knowledge that alcohol was not sold in stores in Australia so when the grocery store only stocked mixers and alcohol free wine and beer, I was instantly reminded of states in the US where alcohol must be bought in stores and went straight to Unilocal to find a bottle shop. To cut a long story short, this is how I wound up at Liquorland Mackay. On the positive side, Liquorland Mackay is everything that you would hope for when seeking an alcoholic beverage purchase. They sell beer, wine, cider, and liquor. The staff was extremely friendly and let us exchange our purchase when we realized we had accidentally bought the wrong thing(*facepalm*). Given that I was just looking for something simple to drink that evening, it definitely satisfied my demand That being said, now that I have visited other bottle shops throughout Australia, I was not super impressed by the selection or the prices. I found the same cider that we bought $ 2 cheaper at a location in Airlie Beach the next day and more diversity in brands at a number of other locations. If you are driving northbound and are looking to quickly stop off to make a purchase in Mackay, this establishment will meet your needs. However, I see no reason why one should go out of their way to pay a visit!
