.If you are looking for a jeweller to make an engagement ring to order, I cannot recommend A Benjamin and Sons highly enough.
Benjamins has been situated on Little Collins St for generations, and specialises in made to order pieces and old fashioned service.
This business is a family affair that scores emotional points for me, as it has created jewellery for three generations of my family.
Over the years, I have spoken to many people who all rave about the service, and were all referred by a family member, friend or work mate.
David has been responsible for my engagement ring, wedding rings (his and hers), a pair of sapphire earrings and re-​setting an old ring that was once my great grandmother’s.
Whilst initially coming across as disorganised and a little bit «nutty professor»; David is extremely good at working with customers to achieve the piece they want, within their specified budget.
He is great at making suggestions on how to improve a piece (eg: rolling the inside of my husband’s ring to make it more comfortable for a bloke who «doesn’t do jewellery», or changing a setting slightly to make a stone more secure) and also on how to get more «bang for your buck» (changing the cut of a diamond to make it look bigger).
Last of all, he is very patient with novices, and he has an uncanny memory for the pieces he creates, and the customers they belong to. Several times I have been greeted by name as I enter the store (once a year at most). Other times, he has looked at the pieces I am dropping off for cleaning and has told me another piece is due for a clean, or has asked about my grandfather’s tomato plants. (trust me, they were renowned)
Over the years, I have never been charged to have my jewellery maintained (even items bought elsewhere), and they have often completed minor repairs for me free of charge.

Contrary to how this review sounds, I am not dripping in jewels, or the sort of person who would usually have a «family jeweller»!!
I was originally referred to this jeweller by my grandfather, who had dealt with the business for years, and had developed a friendship with one of the owners.
