I like my job, but it’s unfortunate that it’s located on a very quiet part of St Kilda Road. This means I don’t have very many food options. Detour Café is one of three cafes/restaurants of walking distance that actually has table service. Most of the other establishments are take away joints, which is fine if you’re in a rush, but not fine if you just want to have an enjoyable sit down meal. In terms of the food, it’s okay. On the menu, you’ll find risottos, pastas, burgers, and salads — the usual café dishes. They also have focaccias with fillings from smoked salmon and capers to avocado, chicken, and bacon. The food is nothing spectacular, but it’s nice to get out of the office and have a sit down meal. This is what makes Detour one of the more busy cafes in this area of St Kilda Road. For a main dish and coffee/drink, you’re paying around $ 17, which is a fairly inexpensive lunch. Service is quite friendly — they know you by name because they do have a lot of regulars being one of the few cafes here. Unfortunately, the coffee is a bit hit and miss. I’ll be honest, if I didn’t work in this area, I would never go to Detour, but considering my other options, it is A-OK.
