Well this was a pleasant surprise! Being a complete and utter Melbourne snob, I would generally turn my nose up at cheap Thai food on the main street of our fine town. «Thai? On Swanston Street? Please.» This time though, hanger got the better of me and I lost all interest in hunting down a cool, hip venue. We walked in and were immediately greeted and given, quite possibly, the world’s largest menus. Two Singhas later and we were ready to order. Here’s what we got: + Waterfall Thai beef Salad + Thai Fish Cakes + Prawn Spring Rolls + Chicken Pad Thai All were genuinely sensational. The Fish Cakes were outstanding and had a nice spicy kick to them, while the prawn spring rolls were crunchy and crisp. The real standout though was the Thai Beef Salad. The ingredients were obviously fresh and the combo of mint and chilli was absolute perfection. A highly recommended destination for a lazy CBD dinner.

It doesn’t have the greatest ambiance As the tables are jammed together too close in spots, sometimes you have to share tables with strangers and it can be a bit noisy. Thankfully the food does make up for that. It’s cheap and tasty with decent portion sizes. The food is a little oilier than some places but I didn’t mind it.

Food is average. But the service is bad. Won’t be coming here again.

If you’re on Swanston st for a quick authentic Thai meal… Ghin Khao is not the place to go. Food delivery is fast but the food wasn’t that orgasmic. We had a Pad Thai, papaya salad, duck curry and another salad dish. The papaya salad probably stood out. We also didn’t have any cutlery and napkins on our table and it took a while to get a waiters attention to get some. If you do eat here, I don’t recommend you sitting at the table near the door, not only does it get cold but you can accidentally trip as there’s a little raised area.

I’m not sure this place is completely authentic. I always thought Thai food was all about nice clean flavours, but the lunch special I ordered was a little heavy on the grease. My stir-fried chicken had a 0.5cm layer of oil on the top, sure it still tasted nice, but it left me feeling a little bit dirty. I’m also not a big fan of the shared seating, I don’t know about you, but I hate having to share my table with complete strangers. Not bad though.

With the option to make the majority of meals vegetarian by substituting meat for tofu, the menu at Ghin Khao has a lot of options. The food was quick and tasty, but pretty basic. We were a little disappointed by the small amount of tofu that was added, however the overall meal was very satisfying.

Used to go here a lot and therefore it was an easy choice for a quick post-movie dinner in the city. The menu is really comprehensive and consists of all the usual suspects — curries, noodles, salads etc. Our meal was $ 40 for 2 dishes and 2 Changs, this represents good value I reckon. I didn’t feel the quality(of the meat especially) was as good as it was when it first opened, and the interior is looking a bit tired and like it could do with a good wipe down. All in all, a good pick for a cheap and cheerful Thai meal in the CBD.

Stopped here for lunch while passing through Melbourne. Found it near the entrance to Chinatown. Good food, authentic enough, small seating area but clean.
