Business Owner

Martin McIntosh is the director, owner and heart & soul of Outré Gallery. Often behind the scenes these days, he still enjoys working on the floor and speaking to visitors with absolute passion about the art we sell. He established Outré Gallery in an organic manner out of Toon-In Gallery.

Martin is also the force behind Outré Gallery Press — our book publishing arm.

Martin loves hamburgers, dachshunds, vinyl records, beatniks, mid-century furniture, old bookshops and shopping at vintage flea markets.

Great little gallery to visit while you’re in the cbd. Of I had hundreds to drop on some art, I’d come here! Gorgeous, funky prints, framed and unframed. Some books and sculptures for sale as well. Well worth a look.

Dream gallery. Outré is just so cool, yanno? I’ve discovered some of my favourite artists in Outré, and have come across works of other artists I love on the walls. A lot of the pieces here stick with me, either consciously or subconsciously, and sometimes the lines blur as to whether I first discovered them here or not (though I’m willing to bet that I really did first see them all here).
Most of the art is actually quite affordable, which gives me hope for one day plucking up the nerve to own some. I would happily hang at least 90% of Outré’s regular collection on my walls at home. It’s thanks to Outré that I now crush on the artwork of people like Andrew Bannecker, Sylvia Ji and kozyndan, and I love seeing prints of Audrey Kawasaki’s work on the walls when I visit. Also, it was here that I first discovered Rik Lee, who I ended up commissioning for a piece that’s close to my heart… so in a roundabout way that means Outré is always going to be quite close to my heart.

Outré is actually one of my favourite words to use when I want to come off as pretentious.
The gallery is a cool space but, unfortunately the art here isn’t really my type of art — but there are some cool Tim Burton-esque pieces.

I love Outré! I have bought a number of prints and art pieces here over the past few years. It’s also the first place I head when I need to buy a gift — I always find something unique.

I discovered Outré about seven years ago and have been a big fan ever since. At the time I was attracted to the Shag (Josh Agle) serigraphs and ended up buying the most delicious red and pink number that featured hipsters drinking martinis. I’m certain that the positive reinforcement of looking at this picture every day turned me in to an absolute martini fiend with a penchant for skinny legged men with glasses. Swoon.
Outré is a top spot if you’re looking for something to brighten up your walls or an unusual gift for that friend who simply has everything. There’s quirky books (Mark Ryden and Nathan Jurevicius will keep you entertained for hours), figurines and ashtrays, jewellery and a delightful undercurrent of Tiki that will have you hankering for a Mai Tai in no time.
But the main show is the hanging art. Some of it you will love, some you may hate — and that’s what I love about Outré. They don’t pull punches when it comes to curating a collection that will challenge and delight all at the same time — and isn’t that what art is supposed to be about?

Please can someone take me here with a spare $ 4000?
The gallery to go to when you don’t like art.
Well, folks now you will like art. Though there’s nothing
too bland and boring here, some is (as has been mentioned)
lowbrow. But a lot of the prints are very visually stunning indeed.
It’s a store; one can admire all the very modern, impressive
and great to look at art works/prints. There are a lot.
Featuring regular works by Kozyndan– an absolute genius and
legend of the style, Outré houses many works of true spectacle.
It’s a quiet space, — I have absolutely no idea on
the pronunciation of the name, but its a good little
sidetrack off your day. Tiki and 50 – 60’s hot rod-ding culture,
along with tattoo’s and burlesque flavoured books and prints
make up some of the stuff they have.
So potter about and have a poke here and there and see what
you can find. It’s a good spot to have a poke around if you
happen to be in the nearby area.

It’s time I brought out my bass-playing puma again (please imagine him in the corner, next to a mysterious lady puma).
Outré is a wonderful place to find yourself, should you be in the market for contemporary, alternative and pop art.
In other words, think Shag, Mark Ryden and Niagra (just to name a few on offer).
It’s a wonderful way to pass time, just stroll through the store and gawk if you need to kill half an hour in the city. You’ll probably end up buying a book or a Kozyndan t-shirt but you’ll be all the better for it.
There’s a large amounts of prints and special editions here, including some great tiki-mugs and fantastic works in the cabinets.
It’s simply marvellous here, come get some culture into you.

Outré is a little art shop (I resist the word gallery as it’s kind of different to most) that is packed to the gunnel’s with band posters, low brow prints and tiki art. They specialise in prints, so there’s usually something for every budget, though they do stock some pretty amazing one-offs and collectibles.
The place is split over two levels and the sheer volume of art in the space is phenomenal. They will often have multiple prints of the same piece and they have an awesome array of rare and collectible band posters from past and present.
A couple of years back, I picked up a particular collectible print (used on a Thom York album cover no less) for a steal and the thing has already doubled in value. Plus, the staff actually live and breathe this stuff. It’s a valuable addition to Melbourne’s art community. Support it.

I went into Outré to buy a book by Edward Gory for a friend’s birthday. I knew that they had several books by Edward Gory because I often study their window when I’m walking past on Elizabeth St.
Outré specializes in multiple editions of lowbrow popular art, along with books and magazines on the subject. It exhibits artists like Shag, Mark Ryden and «other pop, lowbrow, street and alternative art». It is focused primarily on American lowbrow, limited edition prints and vinyl toys, although there are some Australian artists amongst their stock. There are two spaces, the front space has the display cases and their main exhibition the second one is up a few stairs, where there is their stock gallery. Although they have regular feature exhibition there are little exhibitions everywhere featuring the work of one artist.
I always enjoy looking around the shop/gallery and the staff here knows and love their fantastic art.

A celebration of lowbrow and underground art, pop culture and tiki living. Here you can grab one-of-a-kind prints and painting from around the world. Or score yourself some tiki mugs and vinyl figurines from über cool designers. They also have some great music playing in the background to set the mood as you fantasize where to hang all those painting you wish you could buy.
Simply put, this place totally reeks of awesomeness.
