Great location, even better food. An all italian staff(from the chef down to the waiter) gives an authentic experience. You can tell they love their food here. Great spot to get some take away or dine in

I saw a sign for this restaurant while walking back to my hotel after a long day of touring Melbourne. The menu sounded good, ravioli alla carbonara. I couldn’t check Unilocal or Google at that moment because I didn’t want to go over my measly 120mb data plane from AT&T. Once I got back to my room I and was connected to wifi I googled the restaurant and knew I had to go when it had an average 4.6 out of 5 rating from 13 reviews. I arrived around 6:45pm and was immediately seated. The restaurant is kind of off the beaten path and one of those hidden gems. I ordered the ravioli alla carbonara and was brought a basket of bread and several focaccia rolls. The focaccia was very good but I didn’t try the regular bread since I don’t really care for plain bread. About 25 minutes later the ravioli arrived. The food was very good and a decent sized portion. No real complaints unless you want me to complain about no wifi. Complaining about wifi at restaurants seems to be a theme for reviews in Melbourne on Unilocal. If you like Italian food you should give this place a try.

Scugnizzo is the best Italian restaurant I’ve been to. I thought I’d get that part out of the way because the rest of the review will be slightly in detail and I do not wish to bore you. The environment at Scugnizzo is everything I like in a restaurant — dim yet well lit, ambient, neat, with plenty of room between tables. The food was superb. Most notably, I feel, was the calamari. Fresh, perfectly cooked, served on a simple and subtly tasty salad, it was my favourite dish of the night. Dessert followed the main courses, with the lemon tiramisu and the crème brûlée turning out to be the favourites. The owner/chef, makes his presence known in the dining area by thoughtfully asking if the meal is to customer satisfaction, and if you’re enjoying your night. It was hard to wipe the smile off my face after having being waited on by the classic Frenchman working there, and he is part of the reason Scugnizzo gets a 5-star review. A simply fantastic place to eat. Don’t delay if you enjoy Italian cuisine.

Great honest Italian food made with love. Generous and delicious antipasti platters with gorgeous cured meats. Not all dishes I tried was a raging success but the truffle risotto with smoked ducked was spot on and my mackerel dish was cooked to perfection with a nice crispy skin. This is a little gem of a place that can be found at the wrong of the city serving great values Italian food. They’ve only been opened for dinner on Saturday nights for a year and with the friendly prompt serving I am sure they will have many more. Loved the extra touch of the chef bringing and explaining some of the dishes too.

Scugnizzo’s has been a breakfast and lunch favourite for City workers for some time, but only opened up for dinners last year. My wife and I were some of the first visitors and every time we visit we wonder why we haven’t been back sooner. The food is authentic Italian(thanks to Carmine the chef/owner) and delicious — but it’s more than that. It’s the way he and his staff treat you; you truly are guests in his home, and he takes pride in that feeling. He visits tables, makes sure everything is to your liking, and on every visit, something unexpected(and unordered) arrives at our table for us to experience — it’s the sign of someone who truly loves what he is doing and wants to share with others. I don’t have a favourite dish at Scugnizzo’s, I rarely get the same thing twice. Specials change regularly, and are worth checking out. The wine list is terse but diverse; rather than overwhelming you with 50 pages of options, you’re given a great variety of Italian and Australian wines which will NOT go wrong with anything on the menu. Definitely worth checking out!
