Stephen McLaughlan Gallery

From Cathedral Arcade on the ground floor of the Nicholas Building I take the old fashioned lift to the 8^th floor. On the 8^th floor and around the tiled corridors in Room 16 of the Nicholas Building there is a small commercial art gallery. The old Nicholas Building is full of artist’s, jeweller’s, fashion designer’s studios and a few art galleries including the Stephen McLaughlan Gallery.
In contrast with the rest of decaying Nicholas Building the small gallery has an elegant but relaxed atmosphere with a soft bench to sit and contemplate the paintings on exhibition. Along with the paintings there is also the «object gallery», with a very small exhibition of art pottery or other small sculptural objects.
Stephen McLaughlan is always there and always happy to talk about the current art on exhibition and just life in general. I’ve told Stephen that I think he generally exhibits cool abstract art but he insists that this is just my perspective and that other people see it differently and that he doesn’t think about a particular aesthetic for the gallery.
Along with the art this gallery has a great views of Flinders St. Station, the Yarra and the gardens along St. Kilda Road.
