I have been here for a few Digital Industry events(SMCMelb & MoMo). A nice indoor area for presentations and a decent sized rooftop for summer.

This isn’t quite so classy as I remember it being, although I still really like it. OOM was slightly spoilt for me on this last occasion by mean patrons complaining about how long a new staff member was taking to make a cocktail. My friend and I made a point of being extra nice to said bartender to make up for it. So this isn’t a mark against the venue or the staff as it is against that arsehole bitching in my vicinity. Oh, and the music — I felt that was too loud. Apart from that, this place is recommended for good times and good cocktails.

Yet another of my old favourite haunts! Since 2008 I believe. I’m beginning to suspect I may just have too many of these. The order does all manner of fun events; such as at one point, Burlesque Sunday shows, and a little vintage market stall thing. Its a very old hat setting; high ceilings and gorgeous wooden panelling that is starting to show it’s age– this is good though. At one point the did the most spectacular indulgent grilled chicken sandwiches, with Tabasco on the side; pure and utter hedonistic indulgence! They also do great things like olive bowls and quite darn good other small snacks from the bar. It’s a good bar too. It can be a little outputting for first timers; a lengthy mission of several flights of stairs for instance. Pretty friendly bar staff and generally positive vibe from other patrons. The rooftop courtyard, for lack of a better word, was decked out replete in tiki style on my last visit. This place is a cool hang out spot. I think its well suited for groups who want to have a Merry old time, and this is where bottles of wine can come in handy: it can be a bit of a battle ordering drinks at the bar. *A noted side effect from being yet another popular Melbourne destination. If you like this, then check out Grigons and Orr corner store in North Melbourne on Chetwynd street: much old world charm. A café and food stop, not a drinking venue.

An old friend I hadn’t seen for a while and I met up at the Order on a Wednesday night recently and it was the perfect place for a catch-up. We settled into a booth-like table in the main bar and ordered a couple of glasses of wine and a bowl of nuts from the really lovely bartender, who then gave us great table service for the rest of the night, even when we relocated to the rooftop garden and sat under the stars. The garden is excellent, with interesting art around it(including a map of Melbourne streets made out of computer parts) and has some greenery around. We did have it all to ourselves, which probably increased its awesomeness, but I’ll still be keeping this rooftop in my book for upcoming summer evenings. Considering it was pretty quiet, we stayed late without any hassle at all, just great service and great(and plentiful) wine.

I’ve only been once, and it was absolutely dead. On a Wednesday. Am I that much of a lush?! It’s a cool space, with dancefloor, bandstage, couches/booths/ottomans and a big bar. The bar was great that night, and you can drink relatively cheaply here. I especially love the $ 9 peperoni pizzas! It’s just a random place to find this bar. And I suppose maybe that keeps it quiet on the schoolnights(not that I’m complaining…). It’s up the stairs of a nondescript building and till you get inside, you’ll wonder what you’re doing here. Ha.

Melbourne is all about rooftop bars these days. Funny really, considering that we don’t have a particularly impressive skyline but anyway who doesn’t love a drink with a view. Add to this some summer heat, a few drinks and a rather attractive crowd and you have yourself a winning formula. As well as having its very own rooftop bar, The Order also boasts a very luxe interior fitted out with copious wood paneling and private booths. There is plenty of space which is handy when the after work crowd hits the bar in droves. This is the perfect place to take a group and spill out across the tables, while the drinks are a little on the pricey side its well worth it for the experience.

The Order of Melbourne is a fantastic venue and bar for any mood or occasion. They keep themselves very entertained there with constant events in music, comedy and general functions. I love the set up! Rooftop area with great seating and a little bar makes it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle. The middle area is extremely well set up and transforms seamlessly to a staging area for their Quarterly Retort Comedy Night they hold with a full bar and good cocktail menu. There are also separate rooms and areas they can hold more intimate functions or events where it’s an all-happening venue. I really like these multi-purpose venues in Melbourne where I feel like they bring a great crowd and seem to be the type of place where I enjoy myself most.

Now don’t get me wrong, I do like this place a lot and there is a lot to like but man, take your credit card; or better still, stay away if you’re money shy. The Order of Melbourne is this awesome large space upstairs over the road from the RMIT city campus. They use the place in a fantastic way and hold heaps of cabaret, theatre and comedy shows here, which is commendable. So if the price of a(well selected and delicious) beer or gin and tonic is a little more, I’m not so bothered really. The place has booths and tabled areas — ideal for it’s theatre-style usage — and they’ve recently opened an upstairs rooftop bar, which though not a patch on the Curtain House rooftop, is a pretty sweet space and worthy of a look after work on a Friday in summer. Plus, the people that frequent this joint are generally good lookin’ types. Be warned uglies… Don’t drag the vibe down.

Despite the Order of Melbourne being around since 2006, I only discovered very recently. A friend was having catch up drinks and suggested the Order of Melbourne. In the lounge area of the venue were a number of booths and comfortable areas ideal for groups. The atmosphere was very relaxed and the venue not too packed yet. I imagine it would be good for groups and for after work drinks. Besides the main section of the venue, there is also quite a small rooftop bar upstairs, which is actually more like a rooftop garden than anything else. The views are impressive, but arguably not as good as Rooftop Bar or Siglo for example. This was a really good find and I will no doubt be back sometime over the summer to enjoy the rooftop garden whilst catching up with friends once more.

I had both good AND bad experiences the one occasion I visited the Order of Melbourne. The bar itself has a cool vibe and great décor, but you can’t hear a word anyone is saying. Considering I am a motormouth at the best of times, I never quite know what to do in venues where you can’t talk to others. Sit on my hands? Stare at my reflection in shiny surfaces? I just don’t do silence well. But the music was cool, so props for that. Although the bar was well stocked with Aussie beers and wines, it took approximately 30 minutes to get service at the bar. That’s forgivable PERHAPS at a packed venue. But the Order wasn’t even a quarter full. Drinks finally in hand, we trekked upstairs to find a great rooftop bar. Yay. I love me a rooftop bar. This one had cool views and plenty of room to sit and finally release my pent-up words. Hopefully my experience with the bar issue was a one off, but it is hard to forgive when there are so many great places with speedy service in the same area.

I only discovered the Order of Melbourne a year ago. Located at the top end of Swanston Street across from RMIT, you’ll have to climb a flight of stairs before you reach the Order and more stairs to reach its rooftop. The Order is a large and open space venue made entirely of dark wood. With an imposing bar that offers mostly Australian wines and beer, it’s a great place for the after work crowd. The venue is divided into separate lounge areas — grab a booth or table for some privacy or stand/dance around in the dj area located at the centre. If the weather permits, head upstairs to their rooftop bar and grab a glimpse of the city. A bar that’s great in the afternoon for a cup of coffee or a late night drink, the Order of Melbourne with its cool vibe has something to offer to everyone.
