History
Established in 2007.
Trunk was originally built in 1859 by architects Knight and Kerr as the Mickveh Yisrael Synagogue and Hebrew School, run by the Rev. Moses Rintel.
Since 1877, it has served many functions. It became a State School No 2030 until 1892, and subsequently had a number of educational, social welfare and child care uses like the City Free Kindergarten. Paying homage to its past, Trunk is a true reminder of the character of this part of the city in the late 19th and early 20th century. Thought of as a slum area and inhabited by the poor and vice-prone, Trunk is one of the few CBD venues with architecture and design still deep-rooted into its past, giving the former Synagogue added significance.
Since 1980, the site has been used to house a number of hospitality venues including most notably, Sillito’s Italian restaurant. It then became Trunk in 2007, where the cool shade of the 150 year old heritage listed Coral Tree still remained and delivered the venue it’s name.
